I've been trying to chase down this hard cold start problem.
The problem started out with the engine starting immediately, but ran very rough with the idle roaming. I had to follow it with the throttle for about 5 to 10 minutes before it would steady out - but still rough - or it would stall. If I tried to drive at this point, it would stall if I was not careful gooseing the throttle. After about 10 minutes it was fine and I could drive away OK.
Car runs fine all day, except if left for more than four to six hours.
Fuel pump is new. Fuel pressure reads 34 psi with engine off and fuel pump cycled. This slowly leaks at the rate of about 1.5 psi/min. I was told that that was OK.
I decided to replace the injectors since they had 440K and installed new Ford NOS injectors.
Fuel rail pressure the same as before.
Now the car is difficult to start - long cranking times - even though fuel pump is fine along with the same rough idle problem until after about 10 minutes.
The long cranking time problem didn't exist before installing the new injectors. Cycling the fuel pump before starting the engine doesn't change anything.
For the rough idle after a cold start, it has been suggested to me to -
(1) check the compression since there may be enough cylinder leakage so pressure doesn't build up rapidly enough - especially when then engine is cold.
(2) check the oil pressure since engine won't start on low oil pressure. Perhaps I need a new oil pump.
I don't know what is causing the new problem with the long cranking times. This occurred right after I changed the injectors - but what could I had done to cause this problem by just changing the injectors?
Other -
No codes.
Intake manifold is pristine - I rebuilt one about six months ago and looked OK inside.
Throttle body is fine.
Plugs wires about 30K miles.
Coil is relatively new. 1 year?
CID, CPS, timing belt, water pump are new - 6 months old
IAB is about 6 months old.
Valve job about 30K ago.
One other problem I haven't figured out is that the secondaries won't close when the engine is started and don't work. I've checked the wiring from the PCM to the connector and it is fine. I've installed three different assemblies (diaphragm canister, electronics, rubber hoses) for the secondaries system and still no secondaries. It seems highly unlikely that all three assemblies would be defective. I can feel vacuum in the ****** that supplies vacuum to the hoses to the secondaries "motors". I can close the secondaries if I suck on the common vacuum line with my mouth.
But that is not as important to solve as the cold start.
Any ideas?
Or is it just time to put this baby to sleep for good.
