Well after owning my 91 MTX for 4 months, today I recieved a recall for it...

Recall Number and Description: 98S36 - Subframe Rear Plate Nut Replacement

Is this new or is this something that shoulda been done years ago?

Thanks

It shouldn`t make any noticeable difference unless the bushings are shot.Bad bushings are not a direct cause of the nut replacement though.Get it done, the originals will eventually go bad if it`s driven in the snow.

Get the recall done as quickly as possible. What happens is the old subframe nut will pull through the subframe due to rust. They install a new nut along with a reinforcing plate to keep that from happening. If it pulls through your rear subframe will drop making steering next to impossible, especially when turning.

There gonna drill a big hole in your floor. Just though I'd let you know, because when I pulled back my carpet the plugs they are supposed to put in, were laying on the floor. I would recommend you paint around the hole that they cut, to slow down the rust.

Both driver's side and passenger side floorboards. On the driver's side it'll be just under the clutch pedal. Just pull the carpet back and you'll find them. I'd also suggest putting some silicon sealant around the caps because they don't stay in the holes very well.

Also...I'd check them just to be safe. Make sure that the plate nut is oriented the same as in the picture above. When the Ford dealership did mine, they installed one upside down. Took 2 years for it to pull thru, but it did. Very dangerous situation.

Congrats on the fix. You'll have peace of mind now.

Is there a way to tell if it's already been done without pulling up the carpet?
Have a Ford dealership pull up the vin #. But I wouldn't rely completely on them for accurate information. Best bet is to look for yourself.

is this only for G1s or G2s also???
Yes...kindof. Here's the summary on the recall. Your car is a '95 so you should be ok.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TAURUS AND SABLES BUILT FROM 8-1-88 THROUGH 12-23-92 AND LINCOLN CONTINENTALS BUILT FROM 10-3-88 THROUGH 12-23-92. THE AFFECTED CARS WERE SOLD OR REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: CT, IL, IN, ME, MA, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, AND W. BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, MAY BECOME DETACHED DUE TO CORROSION OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT RETAINING PLATE. THIS WOULD ALLOW THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.

Mine is a 95, which is not on the list, and Ford kept bugging me to get it done. I think I got two or three notices that it had not been done yet and I live in MD which is not on that list either.
