i actually used tin snips to cut my door..i started the hole with a dremel cut off wheel then after about 2 to 3 inches just cut around with the snips...comes close to the lines but didnt touch them..after that it took me almost an hour to get the locking ring loose due to rust(im in Massachusetts)once that was done it went together in about 20 mins..then screwed down a peice of tin to cover the hole and was on my way..

Thats easy for a guy from Fort Worth to say. In the northern states it can be below 0. The straps can be too rusty to " just loosen " Nothing goes smoothly on your back when its ZERO. ZERO will turn you in to a "thinking man".
Let me call the Waahhhmbulance. You live where it's cold. You live where your car rusts. You might break a bolt. It's so hard to fix. WTFO? What a bunch of whiners! If its just tooooo hard for you there, MOVE! Cut away on the sheet metal. Like I said, if it's that important to you, it should be important enough to do it right and to do it safely. If you can't do that, then hire a professional. We don't need a bunch of novice hacks doing stupid stuff and blowing themselves up.

Wow.. After all said and done I figure an update was in effect.

Knocked loose the locking thingy finally.. Kinda easier to see with a flood light rather than the interior lights ( I think my battery is dieing now).. Anyways.. get the pump assembly out.. figure out how to unhook it, and guess what.. my new pump is not the right one.. Autozone says its the right part, but the stem coming out the top is to short so it doesnt fit into the cradle.. Go figure...

That's not done until it has a doily around it.

Was that door installed before or after the installation of the new fuel pump? It almost looks as if done afterward, because I don't see how the pump would come out from that with out giving problems, but then again it could just be the picture.

Specifically, what pump did you order?

I used one of theirs this summer that included the sensder unit (mine was bad) and it fit perfectly. Others have used the pump-only (#2115?) with no problems.

Or maybe a SEAL to seal out fuel vapors and exhaust fumes from entering the cabin :bonk:

Pretty fancy way to half-ass it.
****** is sealed. No fuel vapors or exhaust fumes. Fuel system is sealed, and unless you have a leak, you shouldn't be getting any exhaust fumes there. Nothing half-ass about it, but it is pretty fancy! :nut:

Walbro 255lph installed the same time as the fuel door. No problems accessing the locking ring or installing the pump through the access door. :thumb:

Im talking about a seal between the door and the ******. And because of the placement of the hinge, it would be almost impossible to seal.

Nearly every SHO with a factory exhaust will have a small exhaust leak very near the gas tank. The resonator pipe has a slip fit joint to connect to the catback. Even my completely rust free '89 had a leak there before I installed my custom exhaust. I cannot imagine how many leaks some of these rusty cars may have.

Fuel pump UPDATE!!!!

got it to fit. I had to take two gaskets wrap them around the end of the pump so it would move it higher into the assembly. Works like a champ.. I guess. hahahah..

Poisson you mean to tell us you did not disconnect the battery first before pulling fuel lines & electrical harness! You didnot relieve fuel pressure at fuel rail before pulling fuel lines! You were using a hammer & screwdriver pounding on a gastank in the dark! Your lucky to be alive! No wonder their are concerned posts about doing the access door. Please research & use some common sence before doing any work on a car! I'v done at least 6 doors & the 'SHOPhoenixProject' site are pic's of me cutting Beth's door, but I did not do the right-up as info is missing. It can be done much quicker & safely with the right tools. I would just never use any spark emitting cutting method.

pretty funny that a guy from texas made this comment...

I remember being in Florida a few years ago when texas got a freak snow storm. Nothing funnier than a bunch of redneck, pick-up and SUV driving hicks stuck on the freeway because of 2 inches of snow...

Anyways, to the task at hand. When I removed my gas tank (as it was leaking), the straps corroded to the bottom of the tank, and when attempting to remove the straps, they tore holes in the bottom of the tank. I replaced the tank and straps and cut a hole with the tank out of the car, as I couldn't get a fuel pump in time to put it all back together...

Well, yeah the lighting thing was a bad idea, but I checked twice and cut once with the chisel and hammer. No sparks at all. Never cut deep with the little 1 inch chisel; always .5 inches in. That thing cut through that fiberglass crap like that fiberglass stuff did to my fingers, easily.

I didnt have gas spray anywhere, just dribble out a little and it wasnt much. I was concerned with sparks, ie. my flood light i moved it really far away.. I was thinking what would happen with an open fuel tank and the light blew out or something.. I was more careful than my posts indicated. I also didnt bang where the fuel dribbled out of the fuel line either. I stayed on the opposite side. Figured i would accomplish the task or win a darwin award :nut:

If the fuel pump has failed you don't need to worry about too much fuel pressure.
