Just got this 95mtx Decided to do Rod bearings since It had a knocking sound. The rod bearings looked worn but all In clearance. However the rod cap for cylinder #2 looked to be damaged as well as marks on the crankcase… Wtf

Has anyone seen this before??

I did find small flat pieces of metal in the oil pan so maybe one of the piston rings broke and did all that

I've never seen that in person but it looks like loose material is about the only way to get that with it still rotating. How does the pickup screen look? I would not trust the rotating parts without a teardown or a good look at the cylinder walls. That metal came from somewhere in there.

UPDATE: I stuck a borescope down the y pipe and found the back half of the front catalytic converter too be missing completely and pretty sizable chunks of the front half was gone too (probably sucked into the engine) the rear cat looked fine tho

Was unable too get a good look at cylinder walls might pull the heads later today and see

What do you guys think can she be saved?

No way to know until you can see the cylinder walls and confirm no damage to piston/rings. Exhaust can be fixed and even engine can be swapped out. Depends on if/how much damage and what you are willing to do.

The front half of a cat blowing can indeed cause cat material to be sucked back into the engine, scoring the cylinders in the bank upstream of the broken cat. If you have a bore scope you can stick it into the spark plug opening to see the cylinder walls. The scratch marks will be vertical as opposed to the factory cross hatch at an angle. Pic from a client car. The block was toast and I had to change the engine.

I wonder if the engine had been rebuilt previously and the rods were balanced by taking some weight off the cap on a belt sander.

Highly unlikely because it would be perfectly balanced as is. Doesn't explain why the two caps look like they have been tampered with. I doubt if they have been damaged by cat material that got past a piston ring as the caps point down. But are both caps from the same cylinder bank?

No they are not from the same the cap the looks machined was cylinder 1 and it was right below the marking’s on the crank case. I did find evidence that the only pan was down at some point, marking for 2 different silicone gaskets but the rod bearings appeared too be original due too the wear they showed.

cylinder walls actually don’t look too bad I couldn’t see very well with my harbor freight borescope but did not seem too be any vertical scratches might pull heads just too confirm

as far As the metal I found in the oil pan it was just tiny pieces that you can feel if you rub the oil between ur fingers

I would pull the heads to confirm. I don't trust that damage but maybe someone has experience where all that bang em up didn't damage cylinder, rings etc.
