Found My Vacuum Leak! (**PICS inside**)

A while back I had posted that my air was only blowing out the defrost and floor vents. Somebody told me that was because I had a vacuum leak. Well I found the culprit.

There is a grey tab underneath the metal line with the 90* bend. The air is coming from a hole in this grey tab.

another close up of the grey tab.

Now, I need your help to tell me if there needs to be a hose underneath the metal one, as the hole the air is coming out of is definitely round and just seems like a hose should be there. If not, what can I use to plug the hole?

Thanks in advance.

I believe what you found is your A/C condensate drain.

If it were a vacuum leak, it would be sucking air. You can probably notice that the airflow out that hole will vary with the blower speed.

My guess is that you have a problem with a vacuum motor, it's vacuum supply, or the HVAC head unit (whether aouto or manual).

Loss of vacuum to the HVAC system is supposed to cause all air to blow out the defroster vents.

morpho18, do you still have those images on file somewhere. I'm battling with a similar issue where my blower in the 93 ATX blows out the vents as long as the blower motor is turned way down. When you flip it up to blow at a higher speed it goes to defrost. I did find one vacuum line that was not attached, but it was for the outside air recirculation door (white tube). It's reattached now but I still have the same thing happening. I suspect a vacuum issue but I can't find it.

getting close to a year later, and still can't diagnose the problem. i traced the HVAC lines to the center console, where they plug into some plastic thing right next to the shifter. I had the car running and the AC on and unplugged each line one at a time. 2 of the lines had vacuum. 1 didn't. i traced that one line to a solenoid by the brake pedal. bad solenoid causing loss of vacuum?

sounds like you both have vaccumm leak or a bad vaccumm acuator under the dash. As for changing output with blower speed the actuator arm may have just come undone. At low enough air flow the door can over come the pressure of the air flow to slightly open up.

There are three actuators one behind (blend air) the glove box and two (defrost/vent and floor/vent) behind the radio center console. The main vaccumm for the ac is a small black vaccumm line that penatrates the fire wall at the heater core opening, then to the EATC where it is controled to all the actuators.

the main vaccuum line that goes through the fire wall is fine. it is still producing vaccuum. however, mine doesn't trace to the EATC. when i trace the line, it goes under the center console and is connected to a black plastic piece. There are two lines there. I had originally stated that there were three lines, but there are only 2. the one line that goes through the firewall has vaccuum. the other line that is traced to a solenoid that releases the parking break. that line has no vaccuum.

i feel like i'm barking up the wrong tree here - and i really want to get this thing fixed!

You're tracing the wrong vacuum line. The one you're looking at goes to the gear shift lever and then back over to the parking brake release selonoid. It releases the barking brake (if set) when the gear shift is moved from park.

The one for the AC passes through the firewall with the heater core lines and runs in behind the glove box (have to remove the box to see). It doesn't directly go to the EATC, there is a small weird shaped junction that it connects to and may have came undone.

In the engine bay the AC vacuum line connects to a small tee (check valve) the also supplies vacuum to the vacuum res. located in the pass wheel well. The tee is located on the pass side of the fire wall midway between the main vacuum man and the second vacuum man(pass vacuum man) which also has the wind shild wiper fluid hoses connected to it.
