Drivers door differences: SHO vs. GL

Some girl smacked my drivers door. Its not bad but it interferes with the door lock. Her insurance co might cut me a check which will be good. There's a 94 green GL at my local JY. The drivers door looks good, so I was thinking of getting it.

Besides the lower molding & the interior panel, what is different between the two?

To be honest I haven't recieved payment, but her insurance adjuster estimated the repair at $1220. She dented it pretty good to the point where the lock won't actuate. I have seen much worse though. Most of that is sheet metal labor. She also slightly dented the rear door near where they meet, but i can hardly notice it.

i was going to suggest taking it to a coliision center, but it sounds like its alittle worse than i thought...

have you looked for any SHO doors? probably allready have, if your asking about slo doors...

you could be looking at the cheap way out, and saving some mola for yourself....

even that should be minimal to none...i dont think the SHO would have anything too different than a SLO..just undo the bolt and unplug it right and the round black junction by the hinge and the rest should go together no problem...then just have the mouldings put on and the door lock cylinder changed and you should be in business

get a real SHO door. I have a GL door on the pass side and a sable door on the Drivers side of my 1990. the sable door doesn't have the same body lines, but the GL door does. anyway I rewired both doors to SHO-spec and things are flaky.

The only things in the door for wiring are the power windows & locks (std on all tauri or that era, IIRC), and the keyless number pad (not standard). Maybe also that "puddle light" at the rear bottom of the door that lights up with interior lights. That should be all there is in there that could be different (besides the molding and trim).

I just did this for my mom, her van's drive door got hit. She got a quote for $1575, the other lady didnt want to get her insurance involved so the lady forked over 1575 and I got her an 85 dollar matching door from the junkyard. How sneaky of me

Only the 1st gen Sables were like that.

If your sho has keyless entry make sure to get a door with keyless entry, or your power door locks wont work. Same thing if you dont have keyless entry, get a door without it also.

So your saying you can pull the sable trim off on a gen 2 and the SHO trim will snap right on? But if I buy one off a SLO it will not?

Doors

This is just my .02 cents, but. I had to replace my Driver side rear door, so i'm assuming most of the same should apply to front door, but I dont know about the electronics. I bought a door from a second gen sable in the same color as mine. It had that plane jane stick on moulding that runs down the lower 1/2 of the door. I found once I took the door home, that after you peel that strip off, those oval holes are there, under that trim to attach the black retainers that hold the top half of the SHO panels. All I had to do to modify the door was drill the small holes around the bottom edge of the door, but I just made a template off my old door, and all the holes lined up perfect with the old sho moulding. I would belive getting a door off of a sable would serve you better, because I would "ASSUME" that it would have the keyless and the puddle light, since they are a little more equiped. Hope this may have hoped in some way. :wave:

since we are on the topic of doors i have heard that gen 2 doors fit on a gen 1. They look to be at least similar but i dont know if theyre any little differences that make it impossible. Im interested because ive also heard that Gen 2 doors dont rust out as bad. is this true?

Another Question. What if I get a gen 2 door without the keypad, and I have one. I would plan on changing over the inner panel anyways. So what work would I be doing to convert the wiring over. I mean can I just pull the wire harness out of mine and plug it into the locks and window motor. Or do I have change out motors and stuff as well. Secondly, my door has the black trim around the windows, and all I can find is ones with a chrome trim. Is this replaceable, or does it have to be panted?

Acually, power windows and locks were pretty common on GL's and oddly enough, I've seen quite a few with a keypad. As for moldings, look for a door from a LX/Sable LS the both have the molding like on the SHO. Sable GS models have molding like the L/GL.

a SLO door doesn't say SHO on it....that'd be horrible, find a SHO door somewhere.
