Doesn't want to keep runing

Hey all first time on the forms here. Hope I can find these forms useful as my other car ones :). I own a 93 MTX and had it for 2 months so far. It starting to have some issues.

Well the thing has been having problems starting. First thing that happened was that I backed out of the driveway and started to take off and the it just died. After that I tried turning it over and I couldn’t get it to start. Pushed it into the driveway, let it sit for a hour and it would start again. Now that isn’t all. Some times at idol the RPMs jump up and down as much as a grand. I have tried driving it and then it would show a check engine light on for a bit and would usually shut off after some driving. As of now if I move the car and then stop the car tries to die and usually a hit on the gas can get it going again.

So…I have checked the codes using the SHO Phoenix Project guide and here is what I got…

When turning the key to on:
114 (O,R) IAT sensor out of range - IAT

Memory Codes:
176 (M) Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean Left or Front HO22SSS - Fuel control
177 (M) Oxygen sensor not switching - system was rich Left or Front HO2S - Fuel control
211 (M) Ignition PIP signal was erratic or missing - Ignition Systems
219 (M) SPOUT circuit failure, timing defaulted to 10 degrees - follow code 213 diagnosis
542 (O,M) Fuel pump open, bad ground or always on - - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

When running:
114 (O,R) IAT sensor out of range - IAT
116 (O,R) Engine Coolant (ECT) sensor out of range - ECT
^^^^ The last owner broke the cap by the looks of it and tried zip tying it on so easy fix. Threw it down incase it made a difference.
538 (R) System did not receive "goose" test
^^^^ I think this one is the whole turn the steering wheel and break thing and I don’t think I did it right.

Did the balance check and it hand no problems.

Here is a list of thing that the last owner claims that he put in with in a year:
The clutch
cam shaft sensor

Thing his dad put in when he owned it. Don’t know how long ago.
belts
plugs and wires
02 sensor
crankshaft sensor.

All i did so far was change the oil and fuel filter(btw i check and the filter does not leak)

Also I don’t think this guy ever did the 60k service so if that makes a difference. At first I thought it was the fuel pump but after checking the codes I am not so sure. Hope I went into enough deatil. Any help is appreciative.

o2's need to be changed... (or check if they are plugged in :nut: )
new IAB valve or try cleaning yours.
and your stalling, is from the CPS crank position sensor. that should be changed as well...

you cna find alot of info on the pheonix site, and here as well... the search will aid with that...

as far as this goes. before you do anything, as in buy sensors....
dissconnect the battery over night. then in the morning reconnect and drive it... this will give you a clear view of the codes.

The proper way to clear codes is to pull the jumper when the codes are being spit out. It does sounds like a crankshaft sensor issue. Your o2's may want some attention also. Disregard the 542 as that will be shown anytime the car stalls. The 116 ECT code could have been caused by not having the car warmed up when running the test. Now you say its zip tied together. This is not the 1 wire sender its the 2 wire sender thats low down on the water outlet tube on the firewall side of the throttle body. The other one by the t-stat is the one for the gauge only. And ya the 538 could have been operator issues when doing the codes. Now you will also get a 114 code if the outside temp is below 50 deg F. If it was disregard it.

When I changed the oil when I bought I looked at the O2 sensors and they looked brand new. But then again he also claimed he did not drive it during the winter preventing it form really getting anything built up on them. If it is the crank position sensor i will probably do the whole 60k change. Like I said i don't think he did it and the car is now at 150,000 miles. Another note....if i do the 60k is it really necessary to buy a new water pump?

When water pumps start to leak they leak on the CPS, killing it. Water pump is very highly recommend to change.
