JVC is a good brand name for middle ground head unit. Cerwin Vega's are tough to beat the SPL ratings (loudness not quality of sound) MTX...say no more. Rickie carries some good brand names that most people would be comfortable purchasing.

To answer 68Styles post: Lets see, you stated that "I think it's because big brands don't typically have equipment that is "extreme"" Were do you get that setiment ? Best Buy has RockFord Fosgate (which they wouldn't of had if CC didn't have the exclusive rights to MTX). Circuit City used to carry Nakamichi (didn't sell well) and Sound Stream (too many returns because of faulty product {early lines}). They still carry Kenwood, Alpine (the full line), Infinity, JBL, and MTX. How extreme do you want ? No body has ever out sold Circuit City for head units. Check out all the awards they have won through IASCA events. The reason that big companies don't decide to sell all of the High $$$ equipemnt is that they don't sell that often. You don't make money if it sits on a shelf and collects dust until the day that hopefully it sells. Circuit City carries all of ALpine's equipment (although not all stores have it instock).

There are some good things to be said about going with a national retail chain (Service, selection, items in stock, and price). But the local guys will usually do custom boxes and installs, carry high $$$ brands, and most of the time give better attention to detail. So, its a matter of your sound tastes and your economical status that would dictate your choice of equipment and place of purchase.

Wow, good prices! The cheapest I had ever seen the 12" Vega series was 150 at Best Buy, but that was ONE TIME in the probably 3 years I had been interested in car audio. Ok then, for more prices. What is your price on the Thunder 8000 12" sub, and a roll of Dynamat? Now that I know you have such competitive prices, when the time comes, I think you can count on business from me. Thanks Rickie.

MTX makes subs that are just as capable as anything I've heard. I payed out the nose for a RFosgate DVC 12". It BOOMed but it was more than I wanted, that was the one silver lining in my theft. I got to replace it with a MBQuart 10" and a MTX amp (300 watts bridged) and it give a good thump to the drum solo in ONE(Metalica for those eho don't like rock). Most of the good brands are in close for sound, unless you want to do DB drags you can get away with alot less I found out the hard way. On the plus side Rickie has my business when I get my new SHO save for the head unit. He jumped to help me a what a year ago cause the guys cut my connectors out and I needed help with the wire colors to fix it up and not make my daily drive in silence.

Your price is $49.95 + $5 shipping. As for MTX being good. They have come a long way from selling speakers and amps. I was going to go all MTX in my car but then decieded to give MA Audio a try. From what I heard .... 2 tech guys that worked at Fosgate now work for MTX. Thats why the new Punch amps don't "punch" like they use to. I don't know if its true or not, but thats what i heard.

Rickie: You are correct. The head engineer from RockFord left because they would not let him do some cutting edge stuff on the amps. He went to MTX where they have given him free reigns and look what he has produced. Each and every MTX amp is tested and the actual power the amp is producing is giving in writting by the tech who tested it. Each component is tested before it is mounted to the board. If it is not in spec. its thrown out. MTX AMP's won the IASCA Event the first year out from this guy. Incredible power and usuage. I ran the MTX Pro to the MTX 3x10 inch sub box with a 1 farad cap. It hit like Mike Tyson going after a earlobe. I would buy MTX Amps any day. They still have some awesome subs too, but I perfer the Infinity Kappa Perfect subs and seperates or the Polk DB sub and seperates. Just my individual choice. Sound and Thump levels are incredible.

I won't ever criticize anybody on their choice of car audio, although I have strong opinions and am extremely critical of how my car sounds. Most people think I'm a little bit ridiculous in the money I spend. But I will not hold back in my opinion on radar detectors. I would never sell anybody a radar detector, period. That's because Valentine 1 only sells through themselves. True, they are expensive. But I've had one for over 7 years. I have one of the early ones, of which they've been improved numerous times over the years. I swear by them. I would not call myself a timid driver. I, to this point, have never been pulled over by radar with my detector. Once you purchase it, if a better version comes out, you can retrofit. If you can't spend more than $200, I'd say put it away and save until you can buy one. If you were planning to pay more but didn't want to pay $400 for the unit with radar and laser detection, you're ignorant and impatient. I cannot be more expressive in my opinion for the Valentine 1, can I?? This unit has saved me so many times, it is unbelievable. Sure, go out and buy something cheaper. That first ticket will make that cheaper detector very expensive. But, if you refuse to listen to me, check out the latest detector test in CarandDriver's latest issue!

Yeah, I read the article and have been looking at getting a new detector. After hearing people like Fred and others on here talking about the Passport 8500, I considered that one. Then I thought about a Bel 980 (or even a 950). But I think I've decided on just saving up for a V1. You said that you can "retrofit" the unit if a better version comes out. I guess that's the same thing as "upgrading" it when V1 releases a newer unit with better technology. My question is...how does that work and how much does it cost? Do you have to send the unit back to V1 for them to upgrade it? Do you download something for it off the computer (like the Bel 980)? And how much does it cost to upgrade it? Because I'm thinking about maybe buying an older V1 unit off eBay or something and then getting it upgraded...but I want to know how that is done and how much it will cost me. Thanks.

Yeah, sorry, retrofit was the wrong word. I had up a full head of steam there. They have upgraded their technology about 4 times in the past 7-8 years. To do so, you need to ship back the detector, they upgrade it and send it back. They are extremely quick, though. They also renew the 1 year unlimited warranty as well. I had a problem with mine about a 2 years after I bought it, shipped it back. They had it fixed and shipped back to me in less than a week. They didn't charge me a penny, even though the warranty had expired. The upgrades are generally about $250. BUT I haven't upgraded mine since I bought it and like I said, I haven't been pulled over with radar yet. I will be upgrading soon. In 7+ years, it has saved me probably well over 150 times. NO EXAGGERATION!!
