I replaced the accessory (serpentine) belt in my 95 atx with a dayco #5060850 from Advance Auto Parts. About a week later I noticed a slapping noise and saw that the outer rib had started splitting off, so I took it back and got another one. Now the other new one started coming off the power steering pump. Has anyone else used that belt? Is it the right one? Even the 2 dayco's looked slightly different. The ribs were a little different it seemed, but I could be wrong.

the point was to make sure the pulleys were all lined up properly as well as turning freely.

if they are not lined up, that means something is either bent or installed incorrectly or the wrong part (like a atx waterpump on a mtx car). if they are not lined up, post up a couple pictures of what it looks like so we can help.

i'm at work right now so i can't check it or post any pics but i think it seemed like it was starting to come off at that main tensioner pulley. I had to take it off about a month ago so maybe i didn't put it back on right.

if youve replaced any pulleys make sure you didnt re-install them backwards. everything should line up together.
I use the Goodyear Gatorback Part No. 4060850 from autozone. Installed over a year ago and maybe 1mm of wear thus far. Very nice belt.

That goodyear belt i think is the one that's only $13 right now on rock auto. The dayco belt i got is a little bit wider than other belts according to the manufacturer specs. Idk how much of a difference it makes though.

do u have the a/c delete kit. cuz my dads 94 has that and its just enough off center that it took 5k miles for the belt to split. we just put a new belt on and were done with it. its not driven that much its only 104k so we try to keep the miles off of it

Well, it seems to me that the tensioner pulley is somehow not lined up right, knocking the belt off a little bit, making the first rib come off of the power steering pump pulley. I swapped the tensioner pulley with the upper idler pulley to see if it could be a problem with the pulley itself, Then I put the old belt back on, which I believe is a Kelly Springfield because the box was in the trunk when I got it (along with a LOT of junk and 2 brake dust covered slicers). The old belt has deeper ribs than the Dayco belt, and I think they are keeping the belt on the p/s pulley. Here's a few pics after I ran the car for a few min:

That's the pulley that used to be on the tensioner. You can see where the belt had been.

Is the lower tensioner pulley supposed to look like this?

holy rust batman!

are you sure you had the new belt properly installed? it is easy to get the belt off one groove on one pulley, which can **** the belt pronto.

when you have the belt off, is there a lot of wobble in any of those idler pulleys? if so, that would cause the problem. or, if the rubber piece in the tensioner arm is bad, that could make the tensioner pulley run crooked.

the lower idler pulley looks correct to me.

Yea, about that rust... the water pump broke on it and then it sat in some guy's muddy backyard for a long time.
I'm sure that that was properly installed. After the first belt broke I checked very carefully when installing the replacement. None of the pulleys wobble, but I checked with a mechanic's stethoscope and one of them sounds like it's going bad. And if the tensioner arm is bad, does anyone carry a new one?
