I've done some searching on this site on the D4U1 ECU. Everyone says any 94-95 is a D4U1 ECU but wen I go searching online I get all kinds of different ECU numbers... like CM40, H4X0, A4L0.... I know it's suppose to say D4U1 on it but i'm jus getting confused wen people are posting any 94-95 atx ecu will work.. So does anyone have a part number for this D4U1 ECU?

There was only one ECU for the 94-95 ATXs. That is the D4U1, or just D4U (some people omit the 1). All other letter combos are for other Ford ECUs and will not work.

tl;dr: 94-95ATX ECU = D4U1.

ATX = Automatic TransaXle (I believe this came up in another thread).
MTX = Manual TransaXle. Transaxle (as opposed to transmission), because it is a front-wheel drive (FWD) car. All FWD cars' transmissions are referred to as either ATXs or MTXs. Rear wheel drive (RWD) cars have ATs and MTs.

Just wait, it gets better. The name of the Taurus ATX's transmission is AX4S (or AXOD or AXODE). The D4U1 is simply the catchcode (this is the actual technical term that describes the letter sequence) of the ECU.

There are a ton of acronyms (TOA) for these cars - and all cars in general. The more you learn, the more it'll make sense.

Thanks. I understand what the ATX and MTX stands for.. jus got confused on the name of the taurus's auto trans.. if it was ATX or something else..

Wen I look up for 94-95 auto trans taurus's, I get a lot of different ECU's.. not sure if some are sable ECU's and when I did research, someone was saying that any auto trans taurus from 94-95 will have the D4U1 ECU... well tried searching on ebay for 94-95 auto taurus, ecu... that's how i came up with the different ecu numbers in the first post..

Ok I think I got it now after more research.. I think what I was doing was thinking that all taurus's 94-95 auto's had the D4U1 ECU.. now it's only the 94-95 SHO's that has the D4U1 ECU.. thanks to all that replied..

Yup. For what it's worth, we call regular Tauruses SLOs to differentiate.

to be more specific the D4U1 is for the 94-95 taurus SHO ATX. not for the 3.0 vulcan or 3.8 engine. this is important on the off chance you came to a SHO forum to discuss a non SHO (slo) car.

What is the purpose of installing a D4u1 ecu in a 93 ATX car?

I have a 93 SHO and a salvage yard that if I remember right has a 94 or 95 ATX SHO that's pretty much complete.

Cool thx. It may be worth a trip to the yard. Excuse to take the car out for a good spin anyway. At the yard the prices are great since it's a u pull type place. Too bad I can't find one with an electronic cluster and take that too :dribble:

None of the Tauruses or Sables out there had one... (The instrument cluster)

The 94-95 ECU did more for the tranny than just firmer shifts; it has a revised shift schedule (when it shifts) which is better. The D4U1 is generally much better for transmissions than the H3Z1 was.

I have never driven a H3Z1 equipped car but it is hard to imagine it being any worse than a stock D4U1 car.

Thanks Hawkeye. I'll definitally have to make my way down to that yard and check it out. Too bad they do not inventory their cars by sub model :|

Ok so I was about to change out my ECU in my 93 ATX to the D4U1 when I looked up in behind the glove box I notice that black cover has been removed, nothing plugged into the ECU but a connector just hanging there.. I removed it since it was under the ECU and this is what it looks like

I was thinking it was chipped but don't know..
