ok, i bought a 91 plus and as usual, the cruise doesnt work. i gave up with my 89 but this car is my keeper and i want/need the cruise workin. i do a lot of highway travel and i am a cruise *****. what can go wrong with the cruise?? if the fuses r good than its either the buttons, wiring, vacumm hoses, or cruise unit itself right?? what is more likely to be the problem here?? i know gen 1 cruise isnt the best on the market but is there anything that is the most likely to fail?? i have a spare cruise "unit" anyone know if they r hard to change???

thanx a bunch

My cruise control was out for over a year after having my clutch replaced (has your engine been moved around?) and after taking to various mechanics, including one that knows SHOs nobody found the fix. First and most obvious, I would check the cable to the TB. If that's okay, follow the cable down below the ABS and air box to the servo(?). It helps if you put the car on a ramp at this point. With a flashlight check the hoses going into it and make sure they're all connected. This was where my problem was. One of the ******* had broken off in the clutch job and this problem was easily remedied with a little superglue and JB weld to reinforce the superglue. Another possiblity is under your dash leading into the break swtich just above the pedal. There's a vacuum line that runs off of the switch to disengage the cruise control when the brake is pressed. Sometimes that one gets worn down from rubbing. Good luck and keep us posted.

96lt1,

The cruise control, the horns, and the airbag are connected from their switches on the steering wheel (not the airbag) through the "clockspring", which is behind the airbag AND under the steering wheel.

If it is not a vacuum or cable failure, nor a connection failure, then the clockspring would be the next suspect.

See the discussions regarding airbag removal and the tests for a failed clockspring. rangerj
