It doesn't interfere at all with anything, shifting or otherwise. Since I don't use cassettes anymore, the loss of that space isn't an issue. I'm not sure how I would do this in a 93-95 center console. I still have a goal to slice the wood block underneath it at an angle so that the display is tilted more in my direction so it's easier to see. I'm not sure if you could tell, but I used the space just behind the cupholder to provide 2 12V outlets that allows me to power the iPod doc from there. This makes for a nice neat setup. The FM reception is perfect.
What I really think is neat is the ability of some specially equipped BMWs to provide a native dock interface in the glove box and then simply use the stereo controls to operate the iPod. I think the first version had a limitation of only 5 playlists, but I'm sure this will evolve more in the future.
