I am hoping someone out there can help me. My 89 SHO was suffering from the dreaded Crank Cancer, I pulled the Crank Damper off and found that the key holding the damper and the timing sproket had split in half. I have replaced the key, as well as the timing sprocket, oil seal, etc.. When I pulled the timing sprocket off of the crank, (after pulling the timing belt off) the crank moved. My clutch has been slipping lately but I'm still able to drive it, it took a little effort to move the crank, should have oiled it before trying to pull the sprocket. So needless to say, my engine is out of time. I can get the Crankshaft back to TDC, but am pretty sure the cam sprockets have both traveled, due to my ignorance (had to touch them). My question, after all of this writing, is can I just line up the timing marks on the cam sprokets with the timing marks on the side of the engine (facing straight up) with the crank at TDC? Will that work? Or do the cams have to be on the same cycle (inexperience talking here) or do I just make sure they are lined up and go with that?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

220K,

The left or white timing mark lines up the the "0" on the lower timing cover twice. Once is when both valves are closed on number one cylinder, called the compression stroke. And the other time the exhaust valve will be open, so it won't build up any pressure.

What you want to make sure of is that when the left mark is at "0", you have pressure building up in number one cylinder, and the two cam sprocket locating dimples are lined up with the indents at the top of the timing cover backing plate.

Line them up as shown in this topic. It doesn't matter how you get them aligned this way, but the marks must be as shown to get the timing correct. If the cams are not at 12:00, use the old timing belt around the crank and turn the damper or use a strap wrench on the cam sprocket.
