Unless you have other intake mods (cams, extrude honed/ported intake, big bore butterflies, ported heads) the need for an 80mm maf is pointless on a stock sho. If you want the minimal hp increase, and the noise, just remove the silencer cone.
well yea I was actually gonna do more then just da filter of course...Underdrive pulley,60K,ported heads,Exhuast w/Y-pipe,LPM tuned chip, big bore butterflies along with the 80mm MAF ...

Remove the entire outer fender box. That has been shown to increase HP by about 1; you'll actually lose about 1hp if you just remove the silencer cone (saxacone). Two 11mm nuts hold it in; you'll need to remove the driver side wheel and splash guard to get to it.

IIRC I didn't have to remove the wheel or splash guard to remove my fender box. I'm pretty sure I was able to get it by removing the corner light. Then I just pulled the splash guard back a little to get the box out. Not sure though. It's been a while.

I have an old SHO Shop guide log that details the power gains on popular accessories. I thought I would post them again. The dyno used is a DynoJet model 248C. Its my understanding that this is the best dyno to use because you can achieve repeatable results. The car used is a '89 SHO with 111K miles. A 60K was done on the engine with a leak down test to make sure the engine was in good condition. They ran the engine stock for a baseline then ran the car again after each power mod. Here are the numbers...

Stock HP 183@5900
Stock TQ 189@2800

Added 80mm MAF w/LPM and cone filter
HP 189@5900
TQ 191@4800

Very little power gain and the tq peak moved to 4800 rpm.

prolly isnt that different on other year shos but when i took the air silencer cone out of my 93 i just unscrewed/enbolted the marker light and removed the filter and top part... reached in and pulled it out. or maybe i pushed, whatever. real easy. i dont notice a power increase, prolly isnt any, just sounds a bit different, as others have said
