If the clutch is working correctly, neither transmission fluid nor the transmission itself would allow it to slip like it would in an automatic transmission. If the fluid were low, it would drive (pull) normally for the most part until the lack of fluid result in bearing failure or seizure of internal components (read a few threads on blown differential-pins). And unlike the ATX, the MTX is direct drive - there are no internal clutches inside the case which can slip. Only the clutch or components which actuate the clutch [quadrant, cable, lever, bushings] would result in slipping, as described. So in the absence of internal noise from the transmission, it's most likely the clutch or clutch components.
One added check, would be to try and accelerate in second gear from a full-stop. If the clutch is slipping as badly as described, you won't be able to get the car to move. But a word of caution - if the clutch disc is the problem, you will like create additional damage if you keep trying to drive the car, as at some point the rivets in the clutch disc material will begin to eat into the flywheel surface.
Other things you can try, is to remove the clutch cable and first check for binding or excess play in the clutch lever and cable. Second swap the cable to see if it makes a difference.
There are a number of threads on clutch problems, which will include information (symptoms, fixes) that may help you here. Some simple things you can do, is to get someone else to fully depress the clutch pedal and measure the amount of forward-to-aft travel in the clutch lever.
Hi, my 94 Sho 5 speed barely moves forward in 1st or backwards in Reverse.
The engine revs very high and it will move slowly, very slow. Not drivable!
So I am guessing tranny, clutch, clutch cable or tranny fluid.
Can someone help me or tell me how to determine what it is for sure??
Thank You All!
