Well, tried and screwed up royally at changing a Tstat.

First, I broke off the air temp sensor locking pin that was in the stock air box when removing it from the stock box. No problem because it twists and locks into place so that part seems ok.

The sensor wire isn't long enough to reach the port on the LMS CAI so had to remove that box and put the stock one back on. Must be new shorter wiring LMS isn't aware of on the 2018 that won't allow it to reach the CAI.

Installed the 160 tstat no problem but it must have lost at least a quart or more of coolant in the process. It was literally gushing out of the engine side. the engine was stone cold during the process.

For whatever reason I can't burp the darn thing. I tried the youtube - squeezing the hoses, turning on the heater, running at 2k, going around the block etc. I didn't try raising up the one side of the car. There was heat coming out of the HVAC on and off at times and temp gauge didn't show the engine was overheating but this seems dangerous given so much coolant was lost. Makes me suspect the sensor is in an air pocket and not reading the actual coolant temp which should be high after losing that much fluid.

In desperation I found the head local Ford technician this weekend on FB of all places and he said that they have a tool that creates a vacuum whenever the system is opened up and refilled. He said its not a good idea to burp it without it but could try by removing the top rad hose. The danger is the small turbo cooling tubes can get air into them if the air isn't pulled from the system.

Do you guys have any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

When I changed my Tstat I probably lost about half gallon of coolant. As long as the engine is sucking down the coolant and your engine temp is looking normal you should be good. How our system is setup the overflow bottle is the highest point of the system and should bleed pretty easily by itself. Doesn’t mean air pockets cant happen but what makes you think you have a air pocket?

Could pull the thermostat again and put it in a *** of boiling water and see if it’s opening. Did you add any coolant to bottle?

Are you monitoring with Forscan Lite or Torque Pro? The gauge is pretty much useless for realtime monitoring.

There is no separate sensor for coolant temp, data is derived from the cylinder head temp sensor located on the block. Would be hard to tell if there is an air pocket there.

A Lisle spillfree funnel has been used in stubborn cases where nothing else has worked to burp the coolant.

No I don't have those tools. At least the head/block isn't cooking . I'll see if I can find a lisle or have the dealer drain the system

Thank you. Good to have in this for next time. Not sure how to get fluid into it now without the dealer doing it.

I believe it must be opening because heat eventually come through the hvac. I filled the bottle but it isn't being drawn into the system .

It would not fit on my car but there was extra wire taped up. I just cut off the tape near the connector to the sensor and it was just enough to work.

I just can't get enough slack anywhere to get the wire up. Tried getting the tape off and tugging on it . LMS says they haven't had this issue with any 18 cars . Any other ideas .

Without looking at your car or a similar 18 I don't know if I can help other than you may be stuck extending the wires.

Cut and splice in some extra wire. Just don't cut to close to the connector and be sure to insulate the splices to protect against shorting and corrosion form the elements.
That's beyond my abilities I think e.g. don't know the guage of wire etc .
