Is it possible to access and record the video feed from the cameras built into the car, especially the one behind the rear view mirror? That would be so much better than installing another one and cluttering up the windshield.

Not a camera, light sensor type deal for automatic highbeams and what not. I had mine out to rewire it and it aint even the same as a camera as it looks. May do something with adaptive cruise control if equipped like the front mount sensor. I dont have that option but i still have the light sensor as my ford dealer calls it. Maybe it does the rain sensing also for the wipers. Take it out and put a go pro guts in it.

The sensor feeds the auto-dim controls for the mirrors in addition to the headlights. You can make the mirrors dim very quickly by covering it. I put one of those sliding covers for laptop cameras on it so I can force dimming when needed.

It also dims from the drivers side of the rear view mirror. Leave overhead light on for 5 mins and all dimming mirrors dim dark fast also

You may want to check into Lockpick by CoastalTech. I have one in my SHO to let me override the nav system lockouts, but it also allows for video inputs. It even allows playing a DVD while moving (not recommended but with younger children in the car, it can be helpful on long trips.)

I have one installed also. Down click lets you view live rear view camera and up click lets me watch my boobie tapes while driving.

I thought the auto dimming for the rear view mirrors was only from the rear, as it would be lights from behind that you'd want to dim the mirrors for. I'm not meaning to sound argumentative here, just trying to learn. Covering the sensor would not make sense to me to cause the mirrors to dim either since that would prevent light from entering the sensor, but light is what's supposed to trigger mirror dimming. If it's pitch black out, you wouldn't want the mirrors to dim, and that's the scenario covering the sensor would mimic (pitch black out).

The front-facing sensor is feeds ambient light (how bright it is outside) info to the auto-dimming module, along with the info from the rear facing sensor reading the light coming through the back window, so it can figure out whether it should dim the mirrors or not. I put the cover over it because when I get an over-height monster truck with high beams behind me during the day (yes, it happens WAY more than I like), a quick slide of the cover changes the mirrors to maximum dim quickly. They don't ever go full black. The max dim is more like really dark sunglasses. It works better than you might think. I decided to try it after seeing a suggestion about putting tape over the forward facing sensor and recognizing that would do max dim all the time, which we don't want.

So I'm finally installing my old GPS dash cam, and I want to run this by you guys to see see if anybody thinks I shouldn't do it this way.

It has 12v cigarette lighter power, going to a mini-usb plug. I'm planning to run the cable up into the overhead console. I bought a lighter socket from walmart, and I'm planning to us that to tap into the moon roof switch (it has switched ±12v going into the switch). The only tricky part is, I don't want to cut the harness. So what's the best way to tap into the wires that go into a standard car wiring plug?

Obviously this isn't the actual plug, but it's that type, where the wires snap in from the back, and then it plugs into the socket:

Is there a connector I can buy that's good for what I'm trying to do? I decided this is way better than running 10 feet of cable and wiring it into the fuse box.

@Joe_Cool: Can't answer that question, but running to the fuse box under the dash was stupid easy and you don't have to cut anything and you cannot even tell a wire was ran.

Well I got it wired up and it's working. But...

While I was ******* around with the wiring I must have blown a fuse. Because now my seat doesn't move back when I turn off the car and forward when I turn it on, and even worse, I CAN'T SHIFT OUT OF PARK.

Anybody know what fuse controls that? It's not #18, I already checked it. And other than pulling all 50 of them one at a time, I don't know how to figure out what it might be.

Found it.

After pulling every. single. fuse, I retraced my steps and found that I had accidentally unclipped the connector that goes to the shift interlock solenoid, inside the console. Problem solved!

It doesn't matter now, but for the record I wasn't talking about the light sensor on the mirror. I was talking about the housing above and behind the mirror. I'm not certain, but I think that's a camera?

But at any rate, after lots of reading on the internet it seems the built in driver assist cameras on cars are low quality and optimized for the computer, not our eyes.

Same i was talking about. No it is not a camera, it is a light sensor. They used to be the bulb on the dash.
Newer cars with ADAS have a front collision camera. But every 13-19 at least Taurus has this regardless of any special option
