Have they pulled the motor out and removed the heads & pistons? That is the only way they can tell if the pistons have cracks. A scope would be marginally reliable if the top of the piston were cracked or holed, but with those kinds of miles, the tops of the pistons would be pretty black. Like Crash said, a compression check can tell where there are problems, but not exactly what is wrong.

Have you talked directly with Ford or seen their correspondence with the dealer? If not... I'm sure you can.

I'll try, but when I talked with one of the service reps, he said that all they will do is pull the motor and send it back as a core. So just a motor swap. No local dealer diagnosis.

The motor is worth $1,000. as a core, an that price is already reflected in their pricing. All of the injection system and turbos etc. need to be removed from your engine and added to the new long block.

Have them price out a crate motor. If they are planning a R&R then you may beable to sell your existing motor to an enthusiast who wants a built motor and get a new crate motor installed for less out of pocket $$ than a complete tear down.

Good point!

Someone might be willing to pay you more than $1,000. for the long block, so that is also an option. You don't have to return the core... They'll just charge you the extra grand.

Did you get this fixed? I believe this is a great engine/car I know it is hard but dont get totally turned off by it. I know guys have already said it but every make and model has engine failures.

Did your wife baby it everywhere she went? I keep expecting one of us with a bunch of mods to blow but nobody does. Maybe because we keep everything cleaned out by running WOT?
