how can i tell if the heads are good or not? do they have to go to a shop?

Yea a shop will do a couple of things: check for a crack by using a magnaflux process (dont know if they can do that on an aluminum head though). they will also check for warpage.

Since it is all torn apart anyway, you might just want to pick up a used set of heads and replace the ones that are on there just to be safe. Before I found the forum, I thought I had a head gasket problem. After tearing down the entire top end of the motor, I found that I did not blow a head gasket. I ended up putting the heads back on the car and it still ran the same. In hindsight, I really should have had heads tested before I reused them, but I was short on cash and time. What I think you should do is just pick some heads up from someone here on the forum or on ebay just to be safe.

if i was to get a set of heads might as well have them modified, right? no sense in doing it twice. could a large amount of that radiator fix-a-leak crap get into the heads and cause the ports to get blocked. because that stuff hardens right? and does anybody know what the "jelly" substance that i found might be? i would really like to get this thing running again because its in good condition and an engine would be hard to find in hawaii.
