Blown diff, What now?

So my 95 sho blew the diff recently. Its a very nice sho and i would like to fix it. The problem is i have never done work like this before. Having a shop do the work is not an option financially. How hard is it to replace the transmission in these cars? Where can i find a working MTX?

There is a first time for everything so i may aswell get my hands dirty. I have plenty of time and garage space. Is there anywhere i can get a step by step guide on how to do this?

You can go to shophoenixproject.com and look through the clutch change procedure, or search here to find instructions. You'll need something to support the engine as you have to drop the subframe to do it.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you can post a wtb ad, someone will have one. I got one from member St. Louis Sho, I'm sure he has more. He can also weld the pins in the diff for you so it doesn't happen again.

It's not as hard as you might think. Step one is to build an engine support. The engine will be dangling off of this support and you will be crawling under it, so build it wisely. There are all sorts of plans on this forum. Look up SDPatt's design. It's the easiest to build for a first timer.

Its not hard at all.. Just time consuming if it is your first time to do it right. You will need an assortment of tools, wrenches, hammers, ****, fire, pry bars etc. Also, you will need a 30MM socket to remove the axle nuts! There are, im sure, write ups on this forum if you did a simple earch as well as the above mentioned website! Good luck, and have fun getting to know you SHO because I promise you it wont be the last time!

I actually don't remove the axles from the hubs when I pull a trans, but to each their own.

One more thing...pre order these parts:

Clutch with TOB
4 rear gen3 subframe bushings and hardware
rear main seal

Any time I have ever done any tranny related thing i have just removed the motor as well.. It lets me do some clean up on not only the engine its self, but the engine bay too! again, to each his own!

Ps.. I'm pretty sure there is another diff / trans right down the street from you too. I think if you go that route, you might as well get the axle seals too. The PN has changed like 10 times.. lemme know if you have trouble finding those. I found the place in town that delivers to the dealership.

i did my trans witout a engine support. i lowered the driver side of the subframe and loosend the passenger side and let the engine fall with the subframe.. just undo the hse to your heater core and make sure there is no wires being pulled while the engine is half way out of the car..ill post pics

and x2 on the rear main seal and carrier gasket... also get a wavtrack or weld your pins. otherwise you will be doing this again. alsfb!!!!!!!

You mean like this? This is how mine was.. yet I supported my motor with my engine hoist.. but a jack should work ok too.... this is after the trans was seperated ... get it up on the ledge of the subframe and wiggle it outta there.


helps to have 2 small jacks... one under the motor on a peice of wood to kind of hold it there, and another to hold the weight of the trans. Or.. if you jack it up high enough, and eat your Wheaties, you should be able to bench press / manhandle it on there.

it took me and another person to manhandle it to where we could get it allighned. but yep..pulled it out through the fenderwell

Well if you look at my pic... you can see my big floor jack there.. and I just wheeled it straight in and under the subframe and get it a lot closer. I will say tho I fought a long time the very first time I did it.

Josh at shonutperformance.com has a good how to video....even comes with writtn instructions. I would say build an engine support. You can make one pretty cheap out of a 4x4, some 2x12's, 2x4s and some lag screws.

What if you needed to remove the engine and transmission for repair and you wanted to drop the sub-frame to do it, how high would you need to jack the car up to clear the body?
