Anyone know why the idle on my 1990 MTX will fail when the head lights are turned on. This engine 3.0, was totally rebuilt and for the past year has an idle problem that is very erratic. Cold start is usually OK but second start and slightly warmed will invariably start to surge if I turn on the parking lights or the headlights. Almost all of the bolt on parts have been changed as well as the engine being rebuilt. The engine and car have 207K miles on them. I believe this all started after I had recharged the battery about a year ago. The surging idle is enough to keep it running but it will not drive as there appears to to be a miss. It also appears to be running rich. I have checked the codes and there are no bad ones that come up. Any thoughts might be helpful. Electrical problem most likely but who would know where.

Sounds like it could be a ground or wiring issue.. or first guess is alt or battery not providing enough juice to carry the load at idle.

you may want to move this question to the Gen I / II section. This is a section for the newer cars
