If it is still backfiring, then one of the following HAS to be the problem:

Plug wires misrouted

Valve timing fault

Valve stuck open

well. I got the thing started today, i pressed the gas to the floor and she strted after about 20 seconds of crank. drove it around it still wouldnt hold idle. next time it died and wouldnt start unless I tapped the pedal a million times. Now Im realy lost as to what is wrong any sugg? oh and its still backfiring and popping at low rpm and has no power.

Has any work been performed on the car recently? It sounds as if the timing belt was put on incorrectly or if the car hasn't been worked on recently it sounds as if the timing belt jumped a couple teeth. Either is going to require a new timing belt.

We had a car snap a cam but our case was the only I have ever heard of so I wouldn't say that's a likely problem.

Also, when checking spark plug wire order keep in mind that Chiltons and Haynes both list the coil pack as being (from top to bottom) 6,5,4 when it is actually 5,6,4.

As Steve said backfiring through the intake is a timing issue or mechanical valve problems (highly unlikely on the latter).
