alrighty.

here is my issue.

My 93 ATX (135k) has begun to act strangely.

While driving, sometimes when I stop at a stoplight/stopsign etc, and then attempt to accelerate, it's like first gear is not engaged and the engine revs freely...then suddenly it engages the gear with a severe ****. after it did this...i used '2' instead of 'D' from a stop to get home...and shifting into 'D' once underway acts mostly normally.

When parking, I wanted to back into a space to have better access to the car. placed the car in 'R' and the engine reved freely and then ****** once again into gear.

I don't like these symptoms at all. I guess I might have to get it towed to a shop to be worked on. What is your suspicion of my problem? How much $$ am i looking at here? I'm a poor college student, so hopefully not too much.

i fear the words 'rebuild'

In a related note, does anyone know of a reputable shop in Baton Rouge, LA that does tranny work?

I can pretty much tell you that a rebuild is what you are looking at. I'm not sure of a good shop there, but be wary some can do terrible jobs. The dealers can install good quality rebuilds with a good warranty (better than most shops) and are the same or less than a shops price. If I were to do it again I would have a Ford reman put in.

Does your vehicle speed sensor work? Any CE codes?

My speedometer works...is that an indication of a properly fuctioning speed sensor? If not how do I check it?

Will retrieve the CE codes soon and report back what I find.

I had a somewhat similar problem with my 94 ATX and had to have the tranny rebuilt. If a rebuild is in question or needed you'll want to beef up your tranny so this is the last time you rebuild it. One thing I would recommend is that do not have the trans-go shift kit installed. This is because once the shift kit is installed you cannot use the Ted B. LPM which will improve your shift points and firmness. You can use the LPM for its other benefits but I contacted Ted Breaux and he stated that making the transmission on the ATX SHO stronger you can either do it mechanically (trans go shift kit) or electronically (LPM) and the LPM would be a much better choice because of its ability to change the shift points on the SHO among other aspects. I also need new front motor mounts because of the firmness that the 1-2 shift now gives with the trans go. I hope all goes well and you'll keep this in mind if a rebuild is needed
