After doing my rod bearings I was reading through the SHOPP website and noticed that it was stated the all the rod caps have a little bump on them which indicates that it faces the front of the engine. As I installed my caps I matched up the notches (tabs) on the bearings for upper and lower and installed accordingly. As it turns out the little bumps are not all facing the front of the engine. So my question is this

1. Did I just ruin a set of new bearings? (the engine has only been rotated by hand since install.)

2. Are the notches in the bearings not supposed to line up with each other?

Thanks for the help on this...

The little tangs on the bearings are going to be on opposite sides of the crank from each other if you did it correctly. One side of each rod/cap assembly is stamped w/ a code that corresponds to the balanced weight and something else that I don't recall right off. you need to put the caps back on the correct way with the stampings matching up.

If you only turned it over by hand, you have not ruined the bearings, but you do need to get all the caps on correctly or you will when you run the engine.

Colin, I doubt you ruined anything.

IIRC, the rods and the caps have a letter or a symbol or something stamped on them where they join; 1/2 of the stamping is on the rod, the other half of the stamping is on the cap. So long as the stamping lines up, and you didn't rotate the piston in it's bore during this, you should be ok.

If the stamping matches on the sides where the rod and the cap meets, you're good. If not, redo it and torque to spec. And then you're good.

Is this on every sho? When I did mine I matched up the marks on the side and reinstalled the way they came out, but I thought my tines faced forward. They didnt line up with each other....they were offset from each other. I could be remembering wrong though....that was 2.5 years and about 10k miles ago.

Okay guys...I hate to beat a dead horse about this, but the info is conflicting. According to SHOPP each connecting rod cap has a bump on it. (#21) These bumps are to face the front of the motor. If this is indeed the case, then the bearing tangs (notches) are not opposed to each other on either side of the crankshaft. They would be on the same side of the crank but on either side of one of the cap bolts. I only ask again because I went back in to fix and thats what I noticed. I did not see any match marks where the cap to be installed correctly, only the bumps on the caps. Thanks again for any help on this.

If you look at my post above, this is what I thought....just wasnt 100% sure since I did my bearing over 2 years ago. I would put the tangs facing forward ass it shows in the manual. Did you notice how they were on when you took them off the first time? Have you ran the engine, or just turnrd it over by hand?

Thanks...no I just turned it by hand as I needed to do the other bearings. I will inspect for the marks this evening to ensure everything is assembled correctly.

I went and checked everything last night. It looks all good. Instead of 1/2 markings the caps and rods had 7B markings split between the two. Same concept though. Now its time to buttun up the oil pan and exhaust y pipe night mare and enjoy the car without smoke billowing from under the hood. Thanks again everyone.
