Started to leave stoplight, heard metallic grinding noise, put back in park, tried to put in reverse to get out of intersection, heard same grinding-cracking noise, then the tranny wouldn't engage in any gear. I have 88k on car, it's like the tranny is in neutral when you try to engage it in any gear, absolutely nothing! Anyhting else it could be beside the tranny being totally gone- any ideas? Approx casts if I need new tranny? Thanks

It will partially depend on how many of the internals are fried, but most places, since they have it open already, will go ahead and replace almost everything.
Mine, with shift kit and 3-year/36k mile warranty, $1800.

My rebuild was $1700 so it seems to be a pretty standard dollar ammount I guess.
BE SURE YOU GO TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THE **** KIND OF TRANSMISSION IS IN THE SHO!!!! I cannot stress this enough! I went to a "reputable" tranny shop (AAMCO) and they had NO damn clue about the AX4N transmission. I had to take it back to them THREE times because it kept acting up and finally they installed the Trans-Go shift kit like I wanted in the first place.
Make sure they do all the updates on your tranny and install the Trans-Go upgrades.
You may want to buy a pre-rebuilt transmission and have someone install it. Doug Lewis does some great work from what I've heard and I believe his transmissions are $1200 before shipping. I don't have his contact info but I'm sure someone here will be able to provide that info.

fordspecialists.com. Doug Lewis has a fantastic reputation especially for rebuilt SHO auto trannies. They are modified a bit also which helps them last longer.

Actually, the GenII SHO uses a version of the AX4S transmission, not the AX4N. The non-synchonized design was introduced sometime during the 1994 SLO build season.
The SHO kept its beefed-up AX4S until the GenIIIs.

If you can do the labor of pulling it and re-installing it yourself, you'll save quite a bit of $$$ there. A non-AAMCO tranny shop would probably run you $400-$600 in labor just to remove the old tranny and install a new one.
FPS/Doug Lewis is the way to go if you plan on keeping the car a while and want the best slushbox under you. If you really want to spread the wealth, you can also get a rebuilt one from Ford (P/N F4DZ-7000-DRM - List $1706.67).
I have one in a rear-end wreck '94 ATX w/92K that was rebuilt at about 80K, but without the TransGo kit. It's in excellent shape and works perfectly. I was going to attempt to add the TransGo kit myself (as well as new seals, etc. while I'm in there), but won't get around to it until at least the Fall. If you get in a bind and need to get out of it "on the cheap" email me and we'll see if we can do a deal.

Thanks, I appreciate everybodies input, so now at least I have a dollar amount to look for when the transmission shop comes back with a price, depending upon what exactly needs to be done. If I need more help, I'll check back THANKS!!!

I have asked local shops in the Northeast about it, and it's usually in the $1600-$2400 range, "depending on what they find in there".

I was under the impression that the Gen II Automatic SHO has the AXOD-E transmission. It says AXOD SHO on the pan, for chrissakes.
And the Gen III SHO uses the AX4N.
And the Gen III SHO uses the AX4N.

The AXOD-E & the AX4S are essentially the same trans, if I remember correctly. Don't quote me on that, I just seem to remember reading that somewhere (here or in the Helms or something).

My ATX tranny is going as well, estimate on a rebuild and installation on another one would be $1500-$1700 at Turnpike Transmission in Bridgewater Ma. If i can find one for reasonable money$200-$600 with less that 100k on it, it will be $300-$400 labor to have it installed, if anyone has an ATX tranny laying around that fits that discription please let me know, the cheaper the better, rebuilds will also do
