I have a whining noise in my 2013 SHO with 31K miles on it - at first I thought it sounded like a bearing noise, coming from the rear, kinda like a pinion bearing noise. BUT - it doesn't change pitch - no matter the road speed, it's the same frequency.

It happens only on light cruise from 30-60MPH, although it does persist when I put a little more into the go-pedal, after I first hear it.

It's had the fuel leak recall done, which I understand included the entire fuel pump and associated fittings on the top of the tank as it's all one unit.

I have one month left on the bumper-to-bumper, but only 3 months left before end-of-lease, so was wondering if anyone else had this noise and didn't do anything about it?

Starting to wonder when the fuel filter should be changed :)

All Direct Injection pumps and motors in general make a ton of ticking and clicking noises. You only hear it at a light cruise as the RPM is low and engine noise is light as well.

Well, yeah, I understand that, but it never made this noise before, it's only started in the past month.

For some background, I've done everything from ring-and-pinion swaps all the way to rebuilding entire engines, I'm not a newbie by any means

thanks though!

I'd take it in and see what they have to say, especially if figuring on hanging on to the car. Like Jaimie said, typically should happen at light load, maybe on hills, and with low fuel levels (fuel lubricates/cools the pump). Ford probably will just say it's normal and do nothing, but can't hurt to try.

To replace the "fuel filter" you likely have to drop the tank anyway, because it's integral to the fuel pump assembly :) Ford's "lifetime & worryfree" design ...

Makes the same noise no matter the fuel level. Maybe I should try someone else's fuel, been going to the same gas station for quite a while now.

On the other hand, I'm not going to hold onto this car, I found the fleet order guide for the 2016's: http://www.fleet.ford.com/edms/content?Object_Name=0900cad9825dd0e3

Sync 3. No tuxedo black though :oogle: Otherwise, looks like the same car.

Color and upholstery guide, including interior pictures: http://www.fleet.ford.com/edms/content?Object_Name=0900cad9823f10b3

The 2016 will probably be my "keeper" to tune :thumb:

Yeah. Love the car, but there are a few quirks that I could do without - the MFT in my '13 is "OK" - it has it's quirks. I'm hoping the Sync 3 will be an improvement.

The other one awful quirk that I brought it in for once is that, especially with the tranny in sport mode, if I gun the accelerator at low speeds or from a stop, let off, and hit it again, it just sits there and goes "duh... what?" for a few seconds, and then downshifts (or stays in the same gear) and hurts my neck. I'm hoping it's just a quirk of my particular car, or that the newer Ecoboost engine controls have less "duh... what?" moments when it comes to throttle response.

Of course, when I picked it up I got the typical "tech can not duplicate issue" response

Everyone's waiting on Sync 3 with bated breath. Let's see ...

Stock trans shifting is hard to stomach, that's where the tunes help a great deal (not completely eliminate, but close enough). All this fuel saver logic combined with AWD saver logic leads to mischief. I much prefer the instant results I get in pre-2000 cars. Step on it and GO!

Let's just say that even if the tech couldn't duplicate the issue, at least they didn't take off the wheel, put it back on & not retorque properly, then drive it at WOT through the crowded (J/K) streets and let the wheel fly off & destroy the body. Yes, it has happened before.

Well, it could have been the axle shaft (recall) falling out of the transaxle like this:

2013 taurus axleshaft recall

It started wallowing around on left turns... :)
