Oil in the spark plug wells, an open ground path for the DIS module on the crossover plenum, a really dirty filament on the Mass Airflow Sensor, not enough fuel pressure due to a weal old pump or a really clogged fuel filter, really old spark plug wires and or spark plugs....

You just answered your question. Pull the rear plug wires and you will find water on them and in the plug wells.

Cars with cowl hoods always seem to have that issue. Might want to consider replacing it.

contrary to what you said in the first post, you do not need a scan tool to read codes on these cars - all you need to do is be able to count.

the obd1 port is on the firewall just behind the power steering pump. if you have the black plastic cover like originally was there, it is tucked into a little plastic holder on the front of that cover. if you don't have that cover, it is laying on top of the wiring harness / power steering hoses in that area.

read the codes and tell us what they are.

you either have 2-digit or 3-digit codes, there is no mixing.

read them again and count correctly.

Pull the codes and see what it says. The TPS could be your problem though as you've already mentioned.

Random thought....check the ground strap between the back of the intake manifold to the firewall. First, make sure it's there (back left by the diagnostic port). Second, make sure its tight and the connections are clean at both ends. Then make sure the two 12mm bolts holding your crossover tube are good n tight.

*EDIT
You forgot to mention if this was an intermittent problem or always present. It could also be the canister purge solenoid....

canister purge solenoid will have nothing to do with keeping the engine from revving over 2500 rpm. I know this for a fact from personal experience.

lets stop speculating and wait until we get the codes so we can really help him.
