alternator gremlins

Cool! Our very own forum! Sorry I don't know you that well, Beth, but thanks a ton!

Anywwhhays...I got the alternator out of our ATX tonight(much easier than expected) and I discovered what I think was the problem. When I was taking off the grey rubber boot over the bolted down eyelet(positive leed to batt?) it came off way too easy! As in, broke off in my hand!!! I think it was already broken and the boot was the only thing holding it on. I will bench test the alt. when I pick up the new one to see if I even needed it (oops...guess I should have checked everything better!). Doh! Atleast I'll have a new alt!

So...if you have a battery light coming on sparatically, check that dumb eyelet before you spend the 150 bucks (yep, pretty smok'n deal, thanks DAD!)

Yep mine on the 92 broke there where the nut was INSIDE the alternator case, but I bought one used here off of shoforum for $25. ANOTHER smoking deal! Good tip tho!

Even though you put in the new alternator, keep an eye on that connection, I am on my third one in 6 years. Seems that on the ATX's, the movement of the motor is tough on that cable leading up to the alternator.

Funny thing is, when I look at erics alternator on his 95 MTX, it is totally different than on my 95 ATX as to location of that eyelet in relation to the harness. My cable comes up from the bottom of the alternator (makes that soldering a bear) whereas Erics comes in from the front and has the connector on the top....very nice if you ask me.

One more thing on a separate note: I have Ted's LPM in my ATX. I can bring it down one of these days if you are wanting to see what it will do to your car....er ah the g/f's car.

I just took back my 3rd alternator from O'Reilly's, had to go with a Napa after a recommendation from my master SHO mechanic Sergio. Seems the O'Reilly's alternator has a bad design around the connector. And the Auto Zone's alternators or even worse.

When my motor mount broke on my 93ATX it was letting the engine come up and bag against the hood of the car and it ripped the connector going into the alternator completely apart. Which btw is no longer available from Ford, but thanks to my local parts guy at the Ford dealership he gave us every thing we needed to rebuild the connector for nothin.

I wish the alternator only cost was $150. I had to pay $259. plus the core fee at Napa which I lost btw cause I had to return the bad alternator to O'Reilly's for the refund.
