Hello all - it's getting to be winter in the upper Midwest, and I promised myself I wouldn't go another winter running the factory tires. They're great in the summer, but last winter was horrible and made me dread having to drive. I'd love dedicated winter wheels/tires, but I really don't have room to store an extra set. What's a good all-season tire (on the stock 20" wheels) for a place that gets 6 months of snow?

Thanks in advance.

Snow can get as deep as I'd be able to drive in. Last year we had a storm that dropped 8" in a day. I'm not concerned about plowing through deep snow necessarily, just that the ability to turn and stop with my current tires is horrendous. I've seen comments here about all season tires that are good in winter from personal experience, so I was hoping to combine them into a single thread.

Thanks for the link.

Personally, I've had great luck with anything Goodyear that's a performance/all-season. And that's most mostly on rear-wheel-drive Thunderbird/Cougar MN12 platforms with independent rear suspension ('89-'97). With an AWD car like the SHO, they would have been awesome.

Your mileage may vary, of course ;) - Some people don't like Goodyear, but they've never let me down so I keep using them.

I know you are asking about 20's, but the 245/55R18 Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 cop-car tires I put on my SHO last fall were awesome in snow, ice and deep water. If only they made that tread type in other sizes.

Waiting for mines to come in from tire rack. Seeing your post makes me feel good about my decision

CAUTION on the DWS06!!!!! I've used the General G-max 03 on my Audi and on my SHO - I loved them! However, my SHO needed new tires after the GMax's wore our after 30k of aggressive driving. I read and read all the reviews I could about AS tires and decided on the new DWS06. Guess what? They're completely shot and bald after 12,000 miles!!! I did NOT drive the car on a race course or do any crazy aggressive driving on them! The car is not out of alignment, etc - car is perfect! The tread-wear is the same over the entire tire's surface. I am so disappointed in these DWS06 tires! I am so lucky that I'm getting almost a $700 claim from warranty on them and putting that $ towards a new set of tires.
I'd love to know other people's experience with these DWS06.

Bummer! I hope to have the opposite experience with longevity as you! lol

Have owned both the Conti DWS on more than one car and the Nokian WRG2 and WRG3 on a couple of FWD vehicles. The Contis are acceptable when new, but the WRG2's are night and day especially on packed snow. The WRG3 gives back a little of the snow and especially ice performance of the discontinued WRG2, but lasts longer on dry pavement. If I were in the upper midwest I would go with WRG3 (or dedicated snows on separate wheels) it will go much better in the snow than DWS, and for an additional winter season assuming you drive 10 K miles a year or so..

I've had my Conti's on my SHO now for nearly 40k miles, and although they do display some wear, still plenty of tread left in 'em.

The 'DWS' (which Conti employs in the tread as wear indicators) are each still visible.

Plenty of drag runs, road courses, and at one point, daily driver duties. They've been flawless for me.

$h!t, my record setting speed run was performed on this same set as a matter of fact. I remember D. Millen giving me some playful grief about it, as he desired for me to acquire a good set of summer performance tires. At that time, my reply was simply that I couldn't afford another set of wheels/tires, and the Conti's were remaining in place.

However, now that I've relegated the SHO to car shows, track days, and fun spirited cruises every now and then, when it comes time to replace these Conti's, I think I will follow his advice and rock a set of the Nitto NT555's.

AS-05 is the new kid and I ALMOST went with them. DWS06 is a proven tire and I’ll revisit the AS-05’s in a few years. Have General Altimax RT43’s on the wife’s CR-V and love them (they don’t have our size though).

Here’s the DWS06 on my car:

Running the same here, Love'em 255/45/20

I Think December I will put the Blizzak's on 235/55/18, had them on this time last year, but there's no snow on ground yet. But its 18 degrees out,
when we get 6" bilizzacks will go on

I run Pirelli P7s and they are great in the snow. But here in Colorado I need winter tires so I have a set of 18" Taurus wheels with 245 55 18 Goodyear Eagle Ultra grips. Same tires the cops use on their interceptors.

Hey, ScHmO (great name) - do you use those Ultra Grips year round, or change out summer/winter? I'm in Colorado as well, with a 20' wheel on my 2015 SHO, and I'm trying to pick good winter tires. Thanks... Troy
