I want to replace the factory head unit, is there any way to do this without compromising the climate control or spending a fortune on a custom job?

I wouldn't touch it. If you really want a different head unit I'd put it elsewhere like in the center console.

Personally what I'd do is keep the stock head as is and get some external amps and some line-output convertors. If you want to go to satellite or MP3 get an auxillary input interface. PIE and Soundgate make one for these cars.

And a very simple answer to your question is no.

The climate controls and the receiver use the same circuit boards so it's a no go there. As for the center console, do some DEEP research and make sure that your choice will play well at a 90 degree angle. Lots of head units will not and it would cause them to skip more often. Try and find a "vacuum loading" cd player.

I just removed mine from the center console and had a custom fiberglass job done for where the ashtray is. I had a TV there but didn't watch it enough and decided to put the head unit there. Also adding a 1200W amp and and sub tommorrow as well. Single 12" in a 1 cubic foot box made of birch so I won't be adding but around 10 pounds of total weight.

Thanks guys, I had figured the console would be the best spot. I have already replace everything else with Boston Acoustics (the best sound for the money I have found yet) and a 12" alpine R12 (1000W) all powered by 3 coustic amps. I made sure of a distribution block this time around, this has allowed me to run 4 gauge wire from the battery thanks to some Tsunami battery terminals.

Not yet, replacing a blown torque converter at the moment. Times are from Jackson Speedway, have't been to Knoxville Dragway yet-- do you go?

haven't been there yet.(Knoxville Dragway)
Me and another gut from the forum (from NC), are planning a time to either run at the local track, OR go to the dyno (Air Cooled Classics in West Knoxville)
You're more than welcome to join. Heck while we're at it, lets start a local Shoclub :D Maybe we could even get Ransom to join us. (Supercharged sho owner in Kentucky) thumb

Sounds cool to me, I need to make a few runs. It's been a while and I need a good jolt. :D Let me know when and I'll sho--ha, ha. I have seen quite a few other sho's around town, so I we wanted we could probably get a good crew together. Torque converter is now fixed after 2 weeks in the shop and a lot of farting around by the warrenty company  , so I'll get her back tonight. What's a good night to go to the dragway?

Thursday nights is Import night... I wonder if we could get in, considering we have Yamaha's under the hood wink , and smoke the ricers :D
Friday is test and tune... this is where we want to run.
Saturday nights is for the BIG dogs. This guy at my work who has a BUILT Mustang runs in the 6's eek! .
Of course, I have never ran before... so I might be quite a sight!
From what I've read, a healthy v6 sho will run high 9's shrug thumb

Might have to go for a run next Thurs, depending on the work schedule. I work with a girl who is a member of one of the local import clubs-- I'll find out what the story is. Bet ya none of those guys have seen a Yamaha V8!

Hey TUNEZ

did u already take apart an oval??? I am extremely interested in fabricating an oval for an aftermarket headunit.

I would like to purchase a second oval to try this but I do not want to waste time and money.

Thanks for any help
