Mine is doing the same thing. The Outside Temperature function doesn't display anything either. The display doesn't say "OFF", it is just a blank display. I checked the fuses associated with the EATC, then I checked all the fuses (with a meter). I guess I am experiencing the same problem. My next step was to get into the dashboard and make sure power is going to the connector. I bought a replacement unit on eBay in case that is the problem.

I also am interested in any suggestions other members might have.

The 1993 EVTM shows that the EATC control head has 2 electrical connectors. C274 and C275

At C274 check the following pins for power and ground.

Pin 11 circuit 298 P/O this is Hot in Run position of the ignition switch

Pin 12 circuit 797 LG/P Battery Voltage

Pin 24 circuit 57 BK Ground

Pin 26 295 LB/PK Hot when ignition is in ACC or RUN.

You can check the circuits with a volt meter and then load test with a headlamp bulb to ensure the circuit can carry a load.

The fuses are in the instrument panel fuse panel located under the driver's side dash area.

Fuse 17 is a 15 ......Fuse 16 is a 5 amp.....Fuse 5 is a 15 amp

Also noticed my fuse #5 blows after putting the key in hot , and its linked to the reverse lights and climate control that I have an issue with , also turn signals . Something is blowing fuse #5

What are some common points for the fuse 5 blowing? I only see one post or so about it

Is there anything aftermarket wired into the vehicle such as an auto start or alarm?

Since the 5 amp fuse blows immediately after turning the ignition to run or start, you need to start by disconnecting the loads that the fuse feeds, as in what the fuse protects and re-evaluate.

There are resettable circuit breakers that might possible to use in place of the 5 amp fuse, so you don't keep replacing fuses as they blow.

Are there any other noticeable issues with the car aside from the HVAC control head being inop?

Any aftermarket LED lights or controllers? These items need to be disconnected at their power feeds to see if the concerns resolve.

Otherwise the many circuits that the 5 amp fuse protects need to be disconnected one by one to isolate the issues.

For example, you could have a shorted oxygen sensor or a VAPS Variable Assist Power Steeering Solendoid at the steering rack that is/are shorted..

Or install a 30 amp fuse and look for the source of the smoke.

I'm [mostly] totally kidding. Another trick is to put an old school test light in series with the circuit and disconnecting things until the light glows more dimly. This might require making jumper leads with spade terminals to fit in place of the fuse, or just connecting the jumper leads directly to an incandescent bulb. You can also use a series current meter as long as you're able to see the display as you're disconnecting items. I would not use an LED indicator since LEDs require so little current making it tough to visually spot a change in the current draw.
