OK, removed rear mount, got that little heat shield off and was surprised that the whole VSS and cover came off with it. That made removing the forkbolt easy. Got the new VSS installed on the cover and set it all back together with the 2 cover retaining bolts and I'm having a helluva time getting the speedo cable back in there.

Something tells me I should have put the speedo cable in FIRST and THEN installed the VSS/cover/heatshield?

If that's not my problem, I think I'll be removing the y-pipe and rear exhaust manifold. That'll give me plenty of access to the area so that I can employ that aluminum heatshield tape in all the right places and clean up the area. I think there's a seriously leaky rear cam seal in there, because I was covered with grease and oil from fingertip to t-shirt sleeve.

lol, the one thing I am continually frustrated about with these engines is that there is always oil wherever I need to work.

I've got the new vss and new harness installed. There's been no change. Any other ideas?

The only thing that made this job difficult was trying to disconnect and reconnect the speedo cable to the sensor after installing it. You have to disconnect the upper and lower speedo cables behind the throttle body, and pull the speedo cable out with the VSS and VSS cover. Install the speedo cable to the sensor and the sensor to the housing and THEN install the whole mess together.

The car still has a proflo MAF sensor on it but I've disconnected the MAF and pulled the chip out of the PCM...I don't suppose a disconnected MAF would cause the shifting problems, would it?

I'll definitely be swapping PCMs and following up here before I decide the trans is shot...
