The Opal Frost is parts, thats for sure, but Id like to know if I can at least salvage the ATX. Car has 125K on original transmission (as far as I know its original). When I picked it up it was about two quarts low and the fluid was dirty but did not smell burnt. When cold the transmission shifts normally and 1st and reverse gears work perfectly. When the temp gauge gets up around the "L" the ATX starts to lose 1st and reverse. It will start popping into gear (harsh) after 2-3 seconds, and then after the car has fully warmed up there is no engaugement, but you can feel a slight joilt as the transmission is trying to go into gear, and there is a bit of forward (or reverse) movement (e.x. it will creep along slowly on a level road) but it is definitley not in gear. A search revealed it could possibly be the VSS. Anything else it could be? Thoughts?

thanks!
Silas

It seem's like you might be having more of an mechanical/hydraulic problem rather than a EEC problem. The problem may be in the forward clutch, Possibly forward clutch piston is cracked when engine temp goes up the forward clutch piston may expand causing it to lose pressure. A common problem with AXODE transmission's.

I have heard of this. Can this piston be replaced without completly tearing apart the transmission? Can this be done in car?

Sorry Dude ,you have to remove and tare it down to replace, but to be positively sure that's what is wrong checking line pressure's is the key .

Correction: It only takes a few shifts before 1st and reverse stop working all together, the engine and tranny dont even have to be warm.

The car died at a fellow SHO owners house this evening. I had it idling for 15-20 mins before I noticed it was missing, like it was running on five, I try and revv it up to keep it running and I can bearly get above 2000 rpm. It finally sputters out and dies. I starts again, but just stays running for a few seconds hovering between 300-500 rpm. It was already below E and it was parked on a hill so I suspect its out of fuel. Hopefully, that is all.
