what will happen if i install a 80mm maf without any other modifications? the car i want to put it on has an aftermarket y pipe and thats it. i have plans for ported runners and bbbs in a few months or so. i've heard that damage can be caused but i also see others using them with no problems.

Unless you get one programmed specifically for the SHO (like our PMAS MAF) it wont work.

Your idle will rise and fall and almost stall, at most times, and maybe will all the time.I have a pro-m racing 80maf burned for an 95 atx in my 92 mtx and does this when i first start and when I come to stop sometimes.I will be puttin my stocker in when I can, or just change the sensor back to stock and leave the rest.

Don't do it; without reprogramming the MAF, i.e. Tweeecer your car will run much worse. Unless you have serious mods, the stock 55mm MAF is not a restriction anyway.

Bottom line: If you use a MAF that has a different curve than what the ECU is programmed for, it will not ever work right.
Even many of these so called "drop in" MAFs do not have the same curve as the stock 55.

Just let him bolt it on his car and find out for himself. Are we really going to start another thread on MAF? Half the group likes them and the other half thinks its a waste of time. Also, dont make a claim that the 55mm MAF is not a restriction unless you have documentation to prove it. Your signature is not very much proof that its not a restriction.

There is absolutely no reason to change out the stock MAF! Unless you want to DE-MOD the car- like so many others here do when they swap out parts for those that were not designed for the car! If your not prepared to do the 'complete path'- don't throw in an 'issue' in the middle. I only know of one person here (NOVASS) that has done a 'complete path' intake mod. Every one else de-modded their car. Leave it alone & enjoy it as is- YAMAHA=its a beautifull thing stock!

Is that Opinion or Fact?

i got this maf because i see so many people using them, but i've also read that a tweeecer would be required. i just wanted to know what would happen if i installed it without the tweecer.

at what point does it become benefical to use an 80mm?

Not that I know, but why not add another inexperienced opinion?

I am assuming that there is no use in an 80mm MAF because you have little to no other mods. Exhaust is still the biggest restriction. If you had a Ypipe and so on to the back, plus a modded intake manifold, plus BBB, plus bigger injectors, plus port matched heads with a little added flow, plus a revised intake (cold air/ram air/jacuzzi hose), at that point I am sure a bigger MAF and tune would be beneficial.

The people that are saying it is a waste is because they think that everything else needs the potential to outflow the stock MAF before it would be beneficial to add a higher flowing MAF. Which I will agree with to some extent, HOWEVER, if you do have a properly matched MAF (precalibrated, or reflashed, or twEECed) it would not hurt an otherwise unchanged setup. Then again, I haven't done this to my car so I can't speak from experience, this is my opinion and I reserve all rights to alter, reverse, or deny any and all statements made.

On a otherwise stock car, the 80mm MAF will not prove beneficial.

Especially after you factor in how much money you have spent just on the MAF, and the chip or tuner to make it work properly.

Ive been running a 80mm MAF for 4-5 years now. Tuned with the TwEECer, going from a stock 55mm MAF to the 80MM showed improved idle, smoother power throughout the RPMs, more power on the top end, and better fuel mileage.

The whole "55mm isnt a restriction" argument is mute.

While the 55mm stock unit is FINE, there are better MAFs out there. Ones that will meter air better, and provide the EEC with better data. More efficient, if you will.

I removed the 80 mm MAF and LPM after 2 attempts at a mail tune; just forgot to update the sig; car now runs smoother, quieter, faster, better throttle response with the stock 55MAF and all the other NA mods listed.
