What have you guys with 2010 - 2012 SHO done about the peeling fake chrome? I'm debating on buying a set of used tail lights from a base model to swap out. I've also considered sanding the plastic chrome and painting it but I don't know what color would look right with my car.

Another option would be to tint the tail lights but I'm sure I'd have to go dark to hide the chrome (or sanded plastic) and then I'd end up tinting all of the lights to match. I'm not completely opposed to that I worry about safety and ruining the lights if I ever decide to remove the tint.

What have you guys done to yours? Bc036fbee95956c553add04a9902ecef

I think I could tape the head lights off and sand them. I've not found any chrome paint for plastic (my first choice) and I agree, most any color I paint it won't match the factory paint.

That is my first instinct.

For chrome paint https://alsacorp.com/product/ghost-chrome/ tons of choices over there.
That's why I put the link in my previous post. There are ideas and products in the thread.

You may want to pull the taillights and get after it to get a little extra wiggle room. Unless they are all one piece.

Get the SEL taillights. OR polish off the chrome coating and paint them.

Thanks. I saw that when I was searching but they only seem to offer the outer tail light assemblies. At $100 a pop for just the two outters, I think I'd want to see if I can pull a complete set off of a wrecked Taurus.

Or I may just start sanding the chrome off to see how it looks without it. Maybe hit it with a little high gloss black to see if I can live with it that way... And if all else fails, buy a set of used or new tail lights without the chrome.

For sure used is an option. I just posted the link to get a pic of the SEL assemblies to see the difference. I would totally comparison shop for a used unit.

I tried chrome paint and it didn't work well enough for me, so I replaced them with SEL lights and sold the peeling ones for $25 to someone who wanted to take on the strip & paint black approach. I am VERY happy with the no-chrome ones -- a much cleaner look.

They guys at Drive Time peel it and black it out while doing there used car prep.

Thanks for including the pic! Great look as long as the chrome bar gets blacked out too. I blacked out the silver (not the chrome) bars on my grille, so the overall look sticks with most of the chrome. And the black (when fresh) matches the hood spears.

Well, I went for it today. I'll know in about an hour how the outter lights turned out. If they're ok, I'll do the inners. If not, I guess I'll sand them back down and pay someone. I've been called many things but never a painter. 73634833c48151f506020fde1d01b8665c4b9f8eb330f3f87fdb7bbcfcc808b2

I'll do the other ones this week.

Has anyone painted the lights trim but left the center chrome? The tail lights are all that are peeling. Caa719a32305f65031c1da731895d8009f52d2a0a3a0cfd8d56fe38a2c8249fa

Give it a shot and see how it looks. I don't see alot of examples from the factory. Usually they look chrome or red on the edges. I agree with chrome no bueno opinion. That's a personal taste thing. You can always go back and paint the strip if you don't like it.

I don't mind a little chrome. I'm just going to start with the tail lights and see how I like it. If I get rid of all the rear end chrome I'm afraid the rest of the car won't match and I'll have to delete it all, lol.

I may end up having my rims painted black some time in the future. I'm not in love with the color of those.
