New to SHOForum - 1st post. I been combing the forum for several days looking for information, but I don't see it. Here's my prob:

1995 ATX 108k miles - Rebuild trans 45k ago.

Was driving fine, then one day on the freeway it started slipping.

Now reverse works fine, 1st and 2nd in Manual work fine, but in Drive it will only start out in first then when it goes to engage 2nd, nothing but slip. It will accellerate, but slipping the whole time (only driven it once doing that).

I pulled codes. 645, 646, 647 Incorrect Gear Ratio obtained for 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.

Rather than just assume it was rebuild time, I had a spare VSS, TPS, and MLPS, so i swapped them out. No good, it does however do this: when you put it in DRIVE, it engages into 1st, then revs, releases, then clunks back into gear again. everytime. 2 engagements one smooth, one rough. I also flushed the tranny and put in a new filter. still nada.

Is it tranny rebuild time? I have a spare Valve body, but i'm assuming it's gunna take more than that. UGH.

Sorry for the long post, I appreciate any insight you guys might have!

additionally

Just for kicks, I disconnected the top connector (TCC, OD, temp?) and while the OD light flashed and the transmission ran in "limp home" mode it drove well and didn't slip. putting the trans in 1 gave me 2nd gear and in 2 gave me third. It drove relatively nicely and the manual shifts were quick and smooth.

One more note: i hear a whine from the tranny, sounds very much like a vacuum leak, although I know it has no vacuum controls. Pump problems? or unrelated. could be the canister leaking too, but i do know my secondaries are opening up at 4k just fine.

From the codes you have, unfortunately, it sounds like your ATX is broke and need to be overhauled.

I'm not sure of the exact problem, but it sounds like something inside has let go and is not letting ATF pressure to be built up and maintained. Hence, its not until the engine RPM's are built high enough that pressure is accumlated to engage a the gear -Not good.

Check out FPS http://www.fordspecialists.com/They sponsor this site (at least I think they do) and from what I hear build Bulletproof ATX's that shift amazingly.

Good luck

If anyone can give me more specific info, that'd be great. I've done minor auto trans work, but would never attempt a full rebuild. I've done many successful repairs on less sophisticated atx's over the years, so if I can narrow it down that'd be helpful. I would be more concerned about the clutches, planetaries, etc if the tranny didn't run perfectly while being shifted manually with the electronics disconnected. any ideas? hints? thank you all.

Time for an MTX swap. You can get all the parts to swap to MTX for less than a ATX rebuild. And when done....you'd have an MTX :naughty:
