Man I look at this and think back to the old L98's which didn't kick the fans on till 242* :)

Honestly throwing a 170* thermostat in seems a little 1970ish to me and I don't really know what would be gained. This engine is far more complex then an old SBC. My understanding was these engines were designed combustion wise to burn hot (1,700*). Keeping that combustion chamber hot is going to ensure good fuel atomization and help mix air and fuel faster for more complete combustion. Being direct injected and having less time to mix than other types of fuel injection I could definitely see this helping. This is where I start to question whether or not you're going to gain or hurt performance. Trying to lower the coolant temp in the block could actually slow the air/fuel mixing process in the combustion chamber and hurt performance.

In this day and age I have to believe that if there was performance/reliability to be gained from varying the thermostat temps the manufacturers would use an electronic thermostat that the ecu could control.

Agreed 100%. I was curious what the egt's were on the stock ecoboost. Chrysler calibrated the caliber and neon srt-4 turbo engines at 1720 degrees for the stock engines and for the staged upgrades. Pretty damn hot for oem cars. It's one of the reasons why I haven't bothered with a tune yet on the SHO. Nobody has posted anything about egts that I found between stock and a tuned ecoboost engine.

You both may be right... BUT....

The EB Engine in the Flex does not seem to cool down as quickly as in the SHO.
Tech Addiction dragged his Flex last Fri nite. His best run came after cooling the car down for 45 min. His worst, his last, came when he ran 10 min. after his previous run.

The Cats on my Flex are reading over 400 deg lower than that of my 2 G8 GT's. Ford purposely runs EB engine hot to meet emission regs. They have no choice. That's why there are 3 cats on this Engine.

And tuned engines generally run leaner, which usually means hotter.

I am installing the 170 deg T-stat which I am getting from my Tuner. It may not improve performance, but a cooler running engine, at least to a point should help reliability. Now if I tried to run it at 150 deg.... that would be different.

On my G8's, a 160 deg T-stat without changing fan settings lowered the engine temp from 195 to 180, in normal driving. I will be happy with a 10 deg savings, but can adjust fans if necessary.

T-stat in transit... hopefully will have it installed by weekend.

Holy expensive batman!!

I spoke with Torrie via email and asked why this was so expensive... he replied that they are expensive for him to have made. I didn't realize there were no alternate thermostats for our vehicle. At first I thought it was some type of exotic thermostat that was just expensive. Didn't know Torrie was having them special made.

I installed mine today.... Seems to keep temps around 10 deg cooler than stock T-stat at 60 mph. About 7 deg. at in-town speeds.
Was 76 deg at time of test. No fan temp mods..... I did have the bottom panel off. Will put back on to see if it affected the engine temps.

The stock EcoBoost Thermostat is a 180 deg rated thermostat (stamped on the rim of it.)

In comparing them, the spring in Torrie's T-stat is definitely a thinner material.

As for install, it is very straight forward and simple. T-stat housing is at the drivers-side
end of intake manifold, and quite high up. I slowly un-screwed the t-stat housing bolts, and used a plastic (square) container to catch the anti-freeze. Was able to pour some out from the hose attached to housing. Removed about a pint. Unfortunately, the original t-stat didn't come right out, and leaked some anti-freeze on to top of tranny. Would guess I lost around a pint, but had I been a bit more careful, or had a helper, the loss would have been minimal.

I added mostly water into the holding/expansion tank, to make up the loss. Did add several OZ of anti-freeze.

On a business trip for next few days, so won't be able to do any more testing till weekend.

Nice to hear Bob.

FYI....
I am monitoring my engine temps now with a goPoint OBDii cable into my iPhone.
Also running Torrie's tune with a temp of 185 to 192 just normal driving and air temp upper 70's low 80's...have not really ran the car hard since I've been monitoring the temps......

Bob, I believe if it is not already unlocked, Torrie should be able to unlock the tuner to allow fan temp changes. I had an Evolution tune that I could change the shift RPM right on the tuner but some tuners lock it out so you don't blame them if you tear your tranny out because of too much line pressure. JDM locked me out of everything on my Mustang tune but two years later he still honored the tune and sent me a new unlocked one for free. I had went two inches taller on rear tires and couldn't change the tire size, now everything is great.

I e-mailed him with my results - similar to my post-. Before midnight, he had sent me a
revised tune with different fan settings. Not sure if I can change them or not. Won't be installing new tune until Fri.

HE IS THE MOST PROMPT SUPPLIER I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TORRIE! 9K on Brick with his tunes, and no problems.

FOR COMPARISON:
I am having issues changing tunes on my 09' G8. Bought a 2 VIN FlashExpress cable from VMS (Vector Motorsports - Clinton Township- Michigan. Somehow used both licenses on my 08'.??????? So far, it has taken a month, and their supplier of cable with licenses doesn't seem to have a solution.... Have spent over 2K with them. Owner is a bit thin skinned, so don't want to get him upset and do nothing. Trying to put stock tune back in vehicle to do 2 Pontiac software recalls, which are now 16 mo. old!
While I know I'll eventually get this resolved, as I have a good friend who lives 2 mi from VMS, I want to do it in next 2 wks, as we are headed to FL in mid OCT, and G8 goes on Jack Stands from then till MID- MAY 2011. It would seem that they could take this back and re-flash it with either my 2 VINS, or clear it and send 2 licenses again, and tell me how NOT to get both licenses to 1 car, if I use the cable twice on one vehicle, before using it on the other (which is in FL). BUMMER! Good news for all on SHO Forum is that VMS doesn't do FORDS!

Back on topic....

You can change quite a few parameters like Tire Rev per mile, etc with our SCT tuners.
Torrie would have done it for me, but it was easy for me to do myself.

My MSD DashHawk will allow me to manually turn fans on in GM products, but not sure if it will do that for the Brick. (Have to read the manual!)

For sure the tuner has to unlock the tune for you to make changes and then they can limit what you can change.

Torrie is the BEST tuner I have dealt with and his customer service is INCREDIBLE. Like I said before, I purchased his tuner online at 11:45 with the request for three specific custom tunes, and recieved a ship notice by 12:45. Thats incredible. His email reply's were within 5-10 min of when I sent the question.

Torrie has them on Ebay for $69.95

Mine is in... as is Torrie's adjusted "fan on" temps. At idle, you can rev the engine or let it idle and it stays at 181 deg. Before, it would rise to over 200 in a short time.

My on hwy temps (without fan change, but with 170 T-stat installed) were 181-183 vs 190 before. If you launch full throttle to 80, temp goes up to around 192 by 60, but comes down immediately (within 10 sec) to 181-183. This should help Brick cool down faster when pulling a trailer, or under heavy use.

My radiator and thermo are being installed as we speak and Livernois has already sent my new programs with the 170 thermo.

I had it done while the car was in for deer damage.

By the way the radiator took 4 weeks to get.

Since you saw the Mobsteel grille in person, could you determine if it will open up the SHO front, like my Carriage Works grille did for my Brick??? If the stock upper SHO grille is as restrictive as the stock upper Flex grille, the custom grille may have very positive cooling benefits if it is as open as it looks.

Your opinion????

That's going to suck having to pull the front off again!

All these people removing their front clips, for various reason(s) mind you.....

and yet, I still haven't seen a write up on how to remove that front bumper.

Whatever happened to helping out the forums community as a whole?

I hope my fellow Gen4 guys don't lose sight of this concept.

I know I've done a few "how-to's" already and am more than willing to do the front bumper removal myself (when I am able to purchase a few of those other mods that require doing such) but wth, it'd be nice to see others step'n up.

:munch:

Sorry, didn't think about the write up when I did mine. I took Kirk's advice and went in "head first". Being the second person back then to tear into my new car the last thing on my mind was a writing up a "how-to". I plan on removing it again in a few months to have my bumper touched up. I'll see what I can do this time. ;)

I have yet to pull off the the front bumper for the same reason, nothing to put back there yet. But when I do I will do a "how-to" with pictures, if no one else has done one at that point.

Mike, I know I saw a thread recently that detailed how to remove the front clip, but I can't remember which thread it was in and in a quick search I couldn't find it. I will keep looking...sorry my memory isn't better that I can direct you to it, but I know it's here somewhere.

Pretty sure it was Mike that posted that...it was out of the service manual.

Mike....I laughed at your post which is why I posted what i did;)
As far as "so many people" removing their front clip...I think it's only been a couple there hot shot!! :p

With the Torrie - 170 deg T-stat. I have NO overheating issues... PERIOD!

On my Brick, I see a maximum peak temp in 1/4 mi runs of 200 deg. And... is back to 181-183 by the end of the shutoff area. On the highway, it is consistantly 8-10 degrees cooler than the stock T-stat was. Hard to compare to SHO... My front is really open with the Carriage works grille....

Easy to do... definitely a worthwhile mod.
