Does anybody know where I can buy a good torque wrench at a reasonable price? The only ones I'm seeing are very expensive and don't adjust below 20 inch lbs. shrug

There is absolutely no reason to preload the tensioner on the 3.2L engine because as soon as you remove the artificial tension, the only device holding the load on the belt is the gas piston in the tensioner. It is important that you don't loosen the nut on the pulley itself so that the eccentric hub does not change position. This is giving Yamaha credit for properly setting the tension at the factory.

regardless of what you need it for, a 1/4 torque wrench will be much higher than a 1/2 or 3/8. less manufactors of same equals higher price. but when you do find one it is probably of higher quality than most others.

Scott: Interestingly, the service manual specifically instructs you to perform this adjustment whenever the timing belt is replaced.

It is noted that in your experience, the original factory adjustment is perfectly adequate for the replacement of belts. However, the fact remains that the adjustment does need to be performed if the eccentric is moved.

As I have previously noted, the "pre-load" is more of a "pre-postioning" so that none of the tensioner's range of motion is wasted by taking up belt slack.

I also noted that the amount of torque to which the tension is to be set (4.3 lb-in) is not much. You probably use more force than that when picking your nose.

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't removed the belt yet. I think I'll do the safe thing and not loosen the eccentric pulley. I just thought retorquing the belt was required. thumb

I have an extra set of the 3.2L timing belt tensioner tools available if you decide to go by the service manual (I do for new belt installation) and don't already have them.

Russ,
I appreciate the offer, but I have already purchased the tensioner tools thinking they would be the hard ones to find. Go figure?
