I always forget to change the oil on my cam position sensor.

Try to ignore all the old oil on everything else. Heads are being done soon.

There was a small pool of oil inside the head where the sensor mounts. Is that the sign of a failed cam shaft seal?

if you are doing the heads, might as well replace all the seals while you are there.

Failed/improperly installed cam seal is the #1 reason that the cam sensor starts acting up.

I recommend doing valve cover gaskets at the same time. That way you can pull the cam cap and verify that the seal is seated properly. Since I started doing it that way I have yet to have a seal prematurely fail.

It's my daily so I'm going to get an extra set of heads and do all the seals. I also am getting a lot of start-up smoke so I'm pretty sure this thing is leaking like a sieve.

The Camshaft seals are easy to change without opening anything up. Just remove the two screws on the vane portion. Then use a awl to put a hole into the metal portion of the seal. Then use a screw into the hole you made with the awl and screw in just far enough to have a good attachment. Then use the screw with a pair of pliers and pull out the seal. I have done this on each 60k without any problems. I also put a very light coat of silicone on the outer portion of the seal when installing a new seal. Please ensure you put oil on the rubber portion of the seal.

YMMV
