Looking for a pair of new rear Koni Yellow struts for a 1st GEN. I found a never used pair on Marketplace and I'm looking for the other two to complete the set. I believe these aren't made anymore? But are there other models out there compatible like for a Mustang or Thunderbird or something?

Looking for the rear pair.

If someone is wondering, they look like this:

This is a set I bought in 1994 when they were first introduced. I never got a chance to install them; sold them last year. They were discontinued about 2 decades ago, so good luck finding any more.

The part numbers are 8641-1268S and 8641-1269S. I don't recall which part number corresponds to the front pair or the rear pair. Since they were a "cut the strut" installation, there isn't a compatible set for another model (at least not that Koni will identify).

I believe there are two sets that possibly work:

8641-1288 = rear
8641-1323 = Gen2 rear (short)

I do find it hard to believe that there's not another set that would work. I think it just needs to be found and identified.

The problem is that "fit" is a complicated situation in this case because the mounting is provided by the donor strut housing. The Koni approved fitment assumes the original, factory provided struts are available with the "innards" removed for "Cut the Strut" applications. It was a topic of conversation back in the day that these struts tended to not fit properly into the strut body if you discarded the factory struts and replaced them with aftermarket parts. The usual result was that they would be too loose in the housing and would rattle. In fact, the same thing would happen if too much was cut off the top. I believe the factory struts back then were made by TRW. TRW is now owned by ZF, which also owns Sachs. I have seen listings for Sachs and TRW struts for Gen 1 Taurus SHO specific applications but they may also be discontinued by now.

Maybe the Gen 2 part would work with a Gen 2 strut housing. Your theory is great; sorry I can't confirm.

The correct part numbers are,

8641-1287Sport = Front
8641-1288Sport = Gen1 rear (long)
8641-1323Sport = Gen2 rear (short)

The Gen1 and 2 rears are interchangeable meaning Gen2s will mount on a Gen1 and vise versa. The difference being that Gen2 stock struts are shorter than Gen1s and if used as housings for Konis you need the proper length Konis to fit the housings.

Some replacement struts did end up being stighly too large to fit the Konis properly. That's why Koni included these aluminum spacer rings in rear kits. When you installed your rear Konis into the housings they either fit very snug or just a little loose. If they were loose then you used the spacer rings. I've never had a set require them so that's why I still have these.

I took the konis off my 90 when i bought it. Not sure how long they were on the car or what year they were made. They have the koni knobs with them. Ive tried a few times to sell some old performance parts off it on here but i guess i gotta pay to post and imho i shouldnt have to pay to post up parts that are probably rare…
