One engineer stated the the advantage of thinner oil was easier starting in winter. I do not change weight, just a minute or so of idling, then drive moderately untill normal temp is attained.
Beware "miracle additives" to modern engines the synthetic oils are a very complex brew, some items such as the valve timing advance systems are very sensitive to the oil used.
OK Kids, back to the bitch fight!

Call me crazy, but I say the "5" in "5w-20" and the "5" in "5w-30" -- both "5s" -- mean that the oils flow the same when it's cold out. So, in the cold, "5w-20" would not be "thinner" than "5w-30."

I would further speculate that the "20" in "5w-20" means the oil is thinner at engine operating temperature than the "30" in "5w-30."

Of course, I may be right, I may be crazy, but it just might be a lunatic you're looking for.

I'm still going to use what the owner's manual advises for my turbo engine: "5w-30."

Cheers,

Sean

Correct. To be thinner at start up, you would need a 0W-XX oil. Which is not advised.

The 2012-2012 uses 5W-20.

The 13+ uses 5W-30.

Just to clarify, only the 2010 called for 5w20. In 2011 until the end of production they upped the recommendation to 5w30.

Personally I would run 5w30. They changed the recommendation after a year for a reason. These engines can suffer from some fuel dilution of the oil and with turbos in general having a bit extra viscosity isn’t a bad thing to stand up to the heat and dilution a bit.

I have seen different literate and different discussions on that. I agree with your statement.

I know this is off topic but please allow me. It seems to me that Mr. Spencer has been utterly disrespectful and dismissive of evidence based observations that multiple members have offered. How is it that civil discord and debate has declined to the point at which a newcomer is allowed to be utterly disrespectful to a seasoned forum member who has continually offered beneficial advice and $$$earned experience. It amazes me how Mr. Spencer (who has been on the forum for about a week) was kindly greeted and welcomed upon his premier introductory post by Mr. SM105K, and yet he has offered no such kindness or appreciation in return. Surely my comment will rub at least one person here the wrong way, but I couldn't manage to stop my fingers from typing out this observation.

Yo I can see Mexico on the other side of that wall of text!

If we got excited every time disrespect was tossed around we wouldn't have any active members.

I know for a fact more than myself have bumped heads and mashed keyboards with members that are sometimes helpful but definitely have attitudes. Personally I come from decades of construction work where you deal with cocky ********* all day long. Ironically enough this mirrors most forums even though you would expect slightly higher intelligence from people seeking or sharing knowledge.

At the end of the day, you can participate or ignore it. The one thing you can't do is change it.

I try to have fun because its my life and I'm gonna live live live it!

I miss the days before 2010....
Did you miss out on all the flame wars in the early days? We even had ricer and GTP and other car forums flaming back and forth on each others boards. Waaay back. All kinds of crazy. Might have calmed down by 07.

When I came along Kirk had already moved on from the forum, Archer and Babs were the Queen Bees, and Zach was still crapping in his hands. I'm sure I missed a bunch.

I do miss Bob! RIP

You might be crazy, but your not wrong. :)
Like people who ignore covid recommendations, people who ignore experts advising oil vis are our test samples. See how long it takes for your engine to send a rod bolt out the side of the block, then let us know what you found at the teardown. It's your motor, so no one will care, unless you try to get it replaced under warranty. Then you will discover what advanced engineering knows and understands about your then, carefully analyzed, broken engine components.

On a much lighter (no pun intended) note....

I laughed at how this young lady chose to dispense her oil. Betcha she thinks her motor will appreciate it. Ha!View attachment 14342

When I was a kid, my neighbor told his wife to check the oil before she drove her car. She did and it was low. She went to add the oil................through the dipstick tube. What a mess!

If I told my wife to check the oil, is find her staring at the deep fryer, wondering what I meant.
