Just got an oil change (Mobil 1) and I brought my own filter, a K&N HP3001. I'd read here that the larger oil filters are supposed to fit, although they might be a bit close to the exhaust manifold.

I went to an oil change place close to where I work, my first visit, and they told me the K&N was too large a diameter. Isn't that size supposed to fit?

Larger (FL1A filters) will not fit with gen 1 starter.
EDIT:
I stand corrected, Larger FL1A filters may fit with Gen 1 starter. However I had clearance issues which I believe was due to a starter. I do have a re-manufactured starter, but I would be surprised if the starter changed size. I will gladly attempt again as the FL1A filter is a highly used filter in my garage, and I could eliminate stocking original sized filters.

There must be a lot of variation in the engine, rad fan and starter locations in the Gen I series. Maybe they used different rad fan housings when they found themselves in a pinch.
I just changed the oil and filter in my 90 and I used the Motorcraft FL-1A filter and had no issue placing the filter in place.
Now that it is installed, I can fit my hand between the end of the filter and the rad fan plastic assembly. It is a little less than 2", but not much less.

On the Gen II's, both standards, the space seems even larger (93 and 95) but I cannot access them easily now to give a dimension.

In all cases, it never occurred to me that they would not fit as they installed so easily.

On my 95 MTX the FL1A fit fine (I used Mobil 1 equivalent size for better filtering), until I put a dual core radiator in, then getting the filter out was a very tight fit. I tended to change the filter whenever pulling the radiator out to recrimp

When you look at where the filter is going, at first glance it looks too large, and overhangs the mounting pad by quite a bit.

But in fact it does fit.

The little filter (FL-400S) has the gasket at the outer edge and the filter is a little less than 3 inches in diameter. The big filter (FL_1A) has the gasket located quite a ways in on the diameter, and it is 3 3/4 inch diameter.
But when you put the filters end to end, the gaskets line up perfectly.

What starters after you running, gen 1 or 2?
I will try again. My 91 still has a gen1 starter. Last oil change I attempted to install an fl1a which did not fit. I even tried a second filter without luck. Both filters hit the starter.
