F1 does not use automatic transmissions. A car sans a clutch pedal does not an automatic make.
Correct. No slush box torque converters in F1! F1 has an "automatic" manual transmission with shifting and clutch actuated by electric motors in response to paddle shifters. (Must be a computer involved some where too). There are productions cars with this set up. (Ferrari, Maserti, Lamborghini and Porsche I seem to rcall, may be others.)

I suppose we can think of it a a debate about what is an automatic, but personally, if I do not have to push in and let out a clutch, it is an automatic. YMMV.

It doesn't matter if there is a clutch pedal or not.......the difference is whether there is a clutch disc or a torque converter. Traditional manuals still have a third pedal, but SMG's are indeed manuals.....just with a computerized clutch.
I'm sure a transaxle could be designed to handle the power and weight of the SHO. All it takes is more money than Ford wants to spend.

We disagree.
A TC is, IIRC, a device originally designed to increase fuel economy and lower overall wear and tear on the transmission. And, as the next poster noted, there are fully automatic shifting transmissions out there these days that use clutches internally. If you do not have to manually engage and disengage the clutch, it is an automatic. IMO, anyway, and shared by a few others, I suspect.

Granted, the smg is a "semi-manual", but it was just the standard 6sp manual with a computerized clutch and electrical shifter. Nothing related to an automatic gearbox there.
