Great job! That's a big turnaround from a few years ago, when exploding SHOs were the norm at the LeMons events.

Well done ...

cheers

Oh the exploding was still happening!! We blew our tranny on Saturday leaving me to drive for 3 hours stuck in 4th gear. We still did laps.

Sat night we swapped trannys Ran all day Sunday and got in 7th place.

This year we went through 2 engines and exploded two transmissions...plus wheel bearings strut rod bushings master cylinders etc.

Most everything worth anything has been changed at least once.

Still worth it. So much fun. Half of the fun is just hanging with your buddys/teammates.

Yeah we missed the title last year but this time we nailed it. We have t-shirts to prove it!

Now we have the "cheaters" cross to bare. The judges and some of the other teams think we are cheating some way, some how. Like we can call Jegs or Summit and order go fast parts for our Yamaha's. I say to the other teams, go get a SHO and race it, see how fast it can be. I think part of the problem is people know about the Taurus, it's just an average car, so how can it win races? But we all know the SHO is not an average Taurus, it's a little bit special.

Anyway we did it. The rules don't limit how many cars can be on a team so we got 4 SHO's to score as many points as possible. At least one SHO finished in the top ten in each of the 5 races this year. I think it was 1 top ten in Feb., 2 in April, 2 in June, 2 in Oct and 3 in Dec.

But man between 4 cars we broke everything! Transmissions, wheel studs, front wheel bearings, axles, rod shifters, engines, clutches, on and on. I was trying to calculate how many track miles our SHO has on it and it's somewhere around 10k. Now how many is that in regular street driving or dog years? A million?

We put 800 track miles this weekend. Had a right axle fail Sat. We were 10th 10 laps down at the end of Sat. Sun. we had contact with a Mercedes that made for a loose LF wheel bearing but managed 8th 27 laps down. Drove the car home 300 miles, about 50 miles to go 4th gear starts to make a horrible grinding noise, but it made it.

Great season of racing! Great teammates with a group of fast grandma's Tauruses!

The fact that you drive your car to and from the races must just be salt in the wound for the other racers. Does anybody else do that?

There are a few 2 car teams. There's Speedycop's team in Maryland that has 5 cars I think. But his cars are all sorts of weird stuff. 67 Galaxie, 77 Lancia, 63 T-bird etc. So his cars never finish top 10. The second place team has 2 MX-3's, one of their cars has 5 wins this year, but the second only finished in the top 10 once and it was at this last race. We found out last year that it's about impossible to win it with just one car. Last year's winner had 2 cars.

There are a few cars that are street legal, but I'm not sure if any are driven to the track.

We've done that with our 220K+ mile '89 Corolla All-Trac on team Rally Rolla for each race we've competed in thus far. The longest trip was to Juliet, IL and back from the Detroit area. I now have a truck and trailer to tow it with for future races, but I wouldn't doubt it could keep making the trips back and forth from the track. It's been through 4 races IIRC and has never had to leave on a flatbed [knocking on wood].

I look at like if the car can't make it a few hours on the interstate it sure won't make it racing.

very true

congrats on the success!

I think chump is doing road atlanta this year, although I don't know if I can make it myself, but I think the old lemons team is dragging the SHO out of the barn for another go.

I still say the entry $$ for these lemon/chump things is too high, and to get a car prep'd good enough to last takes a reasonable amount of $$, and then consumables, travel/logisitics, etc. At this point you are at normal weekend racing levels of $$ and you could be driving something that's not a mechanical time bomb. The NASA 8 hr at Road Atlanta in Dec was only $370 or so entry.

I'm sure you're right, you've done both. But right now I feel like I accomplished my goals, win in a SHO and win the championship. They already told us to get another car for next year because we've won enough in the SHO. I'm going to take a break and not race next year. At least not race my own car. I might buy a seat for a full 24hr race. Arrive and drive.
