95 Automatic shifts at 4000RPM

So I got Bill's 95ATX here and it seems to run fine but won't wind out the RPMs higher than about 4000 before shifting into second. It also won't downshift properly.

Is this due to the failure of some electronic ATX gizmo?

Replace the VSS. Also inspect the wiring pigtail section that runs under the rear exhaust manifold and connects to the wiring harness.

Is that the pigtail for the VSS? I'm not an ATX guy, so I'm not that familiar with the area. Is the VSS the one that's a real PITA?

I have done it 20 plus times. I usually do it without removing anything but the passenger side wheel and mud guard. You just need the right sized tools. If anybody ever suggests to remove the y-pipe they are doing the hard way. Removing the rear motor mount makes it much easier. I typically have it changed from tire off and car up to tire on and back running in under and hour.

The pigtail connects to the VSS and runs to the same part of the engine harness which runs the rear O2 sensor. Very annoying to get to, but for good measure I always like to protect that pigtail with some sort of heat protecting loom. That part of the harness sees a ton of heat along with the VSS. I replace my VSS just about every 20k miles.

I've had tons of experience with the sensors and various failures. They do get a bit sluggish over time and to prevent that I replace them as a preventative maintenance. They are only $25. They usually tend to fail due to heat. From the factory the heat cover is not insulated; I insulated that cover along with the loom to the wiring harness.

A good insulation trick is to use HVAC foil duct tape which does a great job of protecting the VSS and pigtail. It can be had at just about any hardware store.

of course rock auto has about a dozen VSS to choose from...got a part # recommendation?

I've done it just like whiteguy3 describes, and its a royal pita but it can be done.

and be sure to put the heat shield back over the new vss or you will toast it in short order and then get to do a replay of changing it!

I would buy it from Advance Auto Parts or AutoZone. They are good quality and are around $28. With a part like this just go to your local place instead of online.

I just inspected the job and in an attempt to prevent tool-flight, can you please tell me what tool you use to get in there...and from which direction?

I've inspected the area and I can see the VSS. I can get my hand on the spring clip and on the connector if I reach my left arm up from underneath by going between the oilpan and the transmission snout.

my success was by removing rf tire, removing fender liner, and reaching in over the axle halfshaft from the passenger side.

I found it was easiest to lay on the intake and reach down behind the motor. Also if I remember correctly I used a 1/4 inch rachet with 3in or 6in extentions. Goodluck.

If the harness IS melted...does that destroy the sensor?

Is it possible to have the wrong gear on the sensor? IIRC, the PO mentioned that was a possibility.

^ Maybe I'll do it. The process is simplistic on my car because I have my custom front and rear motor mounts installed. You'd be amazed how much more room there is with them installed vs. the stock one's. But on a stock vehicle it's really not that bad.

I would replace the sensor regardless, but if the pigtail is melted you can get one from the jy or wanted to buy. If it isn't just give it a good cleaning with electrical contact cleanser and apply a little dielectric grease on the connections. It helps protect against moisture and does help to conduct a bit.

As far as the gear I don't know how you install the wrong gear, but I would think your speedometer would be off quite a bit if it were wrong.

I don't think the wrong gear on the VSS would cause the car to not shift properly, I think it would just make the speedo inaccurate. Have you guys tried swapping in another PCM?
