That is yet to be determined. Can it also rev match on downshifts?
Actually Jim, that part has in fact been determined. In manual mode, it most decidedly will not upshift until you push the paddle. You could bounce it off the rev limiter all day if you wanted to. And yes, it does blip the throttle to rev match on downshifts. For a traditional-style automatic gearbox with a manual mode, this one actually feels pretty darn good, though I'd prefer the paddles to be positioned better and offer upshifts on the right, downshifts on the left. As I've said before, if you think you know how all manual-mode automatics feel and function, this one will make you rethink it, especially on the downshifts.
NOT saying it's a substitute for a stick. I just spent 600 miles with a 6-speed Jetta TDI, and I must say it was nice to get back to a bona-fide manual gearbox. In my book, I'd take a manual SHO over the auto, but the auto functions good enough with the manual mode to not make the trans choice much of an issue for me. I'm actually VERY interested to hear the opinions of others as they get a chance to try it for themselves
And while it won't upshift, it will automatically downshift for you in manual mode if the revs get too low, and/or a combination of low revs and liberal application of power. Yeah, it's auto intervention in a supposedly-manual only mode, but I didn't mind finding myself in a much lower gear when forgetting to downshift after getting off the highway.

I experimented with it, and honestly found no downside to having it automatically downshift if the revs drop too low. When adding power, the only times it automatically downshifted were times when I should've been in a lower gear anyway.
And on a slightly humorous note, I've been wondering if, 70 odd years ago or so, there were groups of guys sitting around in pubs complaining about those damn electric starters, as opposed to the feel of manually cranking the engine over by hand to get it going. :corn:
