I only use a torque wrench for head bolts, cam cap bolts, rod bolts/nuts and main bolts/nuts.

I routinely use an impact for motor disassembly.

I would never use an impact for motor assembly save the crank bolt, accessories/bracketry, exhaust manifolds, etc.

Certainly using an impact to tighten an M6 fastener on the motor or on most of the car is not a good idea.

Do the +40 cams turn the engine interference? I could swear they didn't...

they definitely do

Like I said, if you're any good at what you're doing, you can't mistake the stopping point. Most of the people that I've seen strip this boltson this forum were using a torque wrench.

Feel free to torque them, but I hope you're not doing it with a torque wrench that reads up to 150 ft-lbs. I run them down until they stop, then turne just a smidge more and they're done.

Agreed, you can tighten valve cover bolts and feel them bottom out, there is no need to tq VC bolts, just turn until you feel them bottom out and stop. I really think it's impossible to strip VC bolts putting them in, they bottom out and you will snap them in half before it strips.

phhfff some one stripped my VC bolt. The little ones on the end. Bummer.

those bolts excluded, I'm talking about the others in the middle of the cover (the loner ones), you would be correct, those short ones you can strip;)

you would probably wreck the head before the bolt failed.

The same thing happened on my turbo car on with my tri-flow cams.

I've see the valve cover bolts strip several times (I've never done it). I think I have possibly seen one break in the head.

VC bolts should only be tightened in warmer weather or warmed engine.
ask me how i know this.

i learned anything in the ball park of about 0 degrees makes aluminum not so happy
also i tq them down with a tq wrench when it happened.

I'm with Mr. A on that. There are some things that should have a torque wrench used. Exhaust flanges? Bah. Rod caps? Absolutely. Oil pump? Tight will work. Cam sprockets? I broke one by using a torque wrench. I think there are some just common sense fasteners that require torquing. Most everything outside of the internals don't need it. Inside stuff/rotating assembly I'm a lot more careful with.

Common sense needs to be re-worded... It's not common...

At least, I haven't found too many people with "common" sense.
