Has anybody just had the cats cut off and pipe put in their place to get rid of that stupid 90 degree turn?

I was just thinking, I know it couldn't cost more than $40-$75 to have it done.

Bored and thinking................dangerous thing.........

Edit: DAMN! Wrong section. Been here for YEARS too!!

You may not be able to have mandrel bends and close to equal length, but go for it if you want.

Headers , Y pipe and all the rest.

If you go the mandrel bends route , I doupt you are gonna be in the 40-75$ area , even if you get them welded for free.

Maybe its feasable with normal bends pipings , cheap flanges and access to a free welder.

If you can fab, you can make anything you want. Mandrel bends? Sure! Buy sections of pipe from Summit or Jeg's and weld away. If you have the time, tools and talent to do it, you'll save money. Otherwise, just buy what has already been built.

Well, I have a friend that works at a muffler shop and he does stuff for me REAL cheap.

Basically, I just pay for the parts.

So, is the forum back on the mandrel bend bandwagon? I remember everyone on the mandrel bends because that's what the aftermarket sources sold for us, but when they weren't around for awhile everyone jumped on the mandrel bends won't gain you any performance unless you're pushing serious power, it'll just be money wasted.

By the way, yes you can have the cats cut out and replaced with pipes or you can buy oversized pipes that reduce gains if you're car just has a few bolt-ons.

I thought the biggest reason for the ypipe change was the horrible bends in the factory one, not so much the cat resriction and pipe size ?

I personally don't see the point in spending all the time to make your own Y-Pipe and then putting crush bent pipe in it. Sure, mandrel bent may not make an improvement, but it certainly can't hurt, and is definitely easier to work with. The material price is going to be nothing compared to the time you put into the Y, so might as well use the best parts you can.

Cut a crush bent 90 in half, rotate one half 90 degrees, and see how well the edges line up. It'll look like the Toyota symbol. That's why I went with mandrel bent.

Id wait for one to pop up for sale here on the forum for a decent price, buy that and fix the collector with the aftermarket one posted above.

I believe I purchased mine from a place online called Cone Engineering.
