After a long draw of my SHOwagon running good, something happened inside the tranny and now it will no go down into reverse no matter what. All other 5 gears shift fine. When it first started doing this, it was really hard to shift into any gear in any direction. Eventially after a little driving it went back to shifting normal, just will not drop down into R.

Seems something is in the way. Shifter is fine. Went below to transmission and unattached shifter cable and manual shifted it, still won't push into R. Even tried banging it in, nothing.

Any ideas? Hope I don't have to get it rebuilt again. Besides no R, car drives and shifts normal. Just have to be careful and no pull anywhere I would have to reverse from.

This happened to me once , after I rebuilded it.

For some reason I had to replace 5th gear and it was fine after. The 5th gear teeth were kinda too sharp (dont ask me why) replaced the whole 5th gearset and I had reverse. The sharp teeth were grabbing and prevented to engage R. and 5th was fine on the road.

This problem can also be clutch related.

there also is a "failsafe" in the shifter mechanism inside the trans that will prevent shifting from 5th directly into reverse. if this piece is messed up, it will not allow shifting into reverse.

good chance the trans needs to be opened to find and fix whatever is wrong...

Probably something to do with the shifter mechanism. Right after it messed up first time, was really hard to shift into any gear for a while then went back to normal with still no R. Damn, don't feel an engine pull and tranny shop visit again.

No need for a tranny shop. If you can pull engines and trans, you can open the mtx and fix the issue if you have to.

Last time I opened an mtx, it feel apart as I lifted the case and I did not know how to put back together, lol. I think you need like a box or something to assemble it and drop the case one. I mean the bearing all feel out to and broke apart. I had no idea what I was doing in there. I was just after its diff to send of and get welded

Finally got it fixed, after driving like a year and half like it. Was the gear slider. Don't know what it called for sure, but it was where the reverse gear slides back and forth when it engages and disengages. Was jammed disengaged. Also the shop said there were a few gears beat up and asked me if I used gear oil. I said no, he said ok, make sure use correct auto trans oil. I forgot exactly what I used, but used a mixture of something. I'm going to stick to mercon with a little bit of lucas.
