Looking at putting coilovers in my '89 and the only kit I see is for '96+ cars. So will they fit? And will they require the articulating bearing SHOSource sells to correctly install them?

iirc, the front struts mount into the spindles differently on the 96+, so the coilovers from that will not fit on the earlier SHOs if that is accurate, unless you swap over to the 96+ front spindles. I forget what all is involved in doing that...

I actually have a Gen 3 subframe sitting around.

What about the upper mounts. Would they fit into the Gen 1?

the upper mounts just attach to the top of the strut, so even if they are different you can put on the correct ones.

Yeah but you want the camber plate and spherical bearing.

They will fit.
Either purchase SHO Source upper camber caster plates
or
Re-drill the plates that come with the kit.
Both have been done by others.
Expect $200 quality suspension.
